Human Rights Watch (HRW) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Media Desk Officer in Manila, Philippines or Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Media Desk Officer will be responsible for determining the best messages, the right audiences, and the best vehicle to raise public awareness of the human rights violations HRW investigates and documents.
HRW defends the rights of people worldwide, and scrupulously investigates abuses, expose the facts widely, and pressure those with power to respect rights and secure justice.
Key Jobs Responsibilities
The Media Desk Officer will perform the following functions-
- Ensure that all relevant materials accompanying the online publication of Human Rights Watch research are gathered in a timely manner and are posted to the appropriate WebPages and social media channels.
- Proofread, format, and distribute press materials, such as news releases and media advisories.
- Respond to queries from journalists, editors, and bookers.
- Coordinate translations, including the recruitment of translators, maintaining a translator schedule, arranging and tracking payments, and distributing training materials.
- Help maintain and build HRW’s global media contact database.
- Monitor media coverage.
- Assist HRW researchers and advocates, particularly in Asia, in planning and implementing media strategies.
- Pitch story ideas to relevant journalists.
- Assist with preparation for news conferences, meetings, and special events.
- Recruit and coordinate interns.
- Provide substantive, logistical, and administrative assistance to Communications Division staff, including processing departmental finances, filing, assisting in travel plans, drafting and editing correspondence; and.
- Carry out other duties as required.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, foreign policy or other relevant field is required.
- A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant work experience.
- Excellent reading and oral communication skills in English are required; proficiency in one or more languages is strongly preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including patience and a sense of humor, and ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously are required.
- Flexibility to work some evening hours and weekends is required. Schedule may be subject to change.
- Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills with close attention to detail are required.
- Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally is required.
- Proficiency in computer packages including Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Drupal CMS is desirable.
- Strong interest in international human rights and media, including social media, is strongly desirable.
