Amnesty International (AI) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of News and Features Writer in London, United Kingdom. The duration for the post is of 1 year.
The News and Features Writer works to Produce a range of daily news and feature output covering global human rights issues to support AI’s media work and provide current news content for external media and Amnesty.org, deputizing for the Managing Editor.
The AI’s global campaign is to change the lives of those suffering human rights abuses.
Key Jobs Responsibilities
The News and Features Writer will perform the following functions-
- Create and edit a range of Amnesty International news content (factual, analytical and opinion pieces), for external media and dissemination through digital platforms in order to communicate Amnesty International’s news offer to key audiences.
- Initiate and develop ideas for news and feature output, aiming for creativity/innovation in the way Amnesty International can add value to news narratives, thereby increasing the level and quality of Amnesty International’s news offer and increasing the impact of Amnesty International’s work.
- Ensure strong presentation of AI’s online news and feature content on Amnesty.org and other related web sites.
- Edit news content produced by other colleagues and deputies for the Managing Editor in his/her absence, as delegated.
- Develop relationships with targeted external international media outlets for strategic placement of AI news and feature content.
- Contribute to news and feature output through conducting short audio visual interviews with Amnesty International specialists, as appropriate.
- Moderate news-related user-generated content on Amnesty International digital properties (e.g. blogs, comments function) as appropriate, in accordance with Amnesty International’s policies and its legal obligations.
- Keep abreast of world affairs, the world news agenda and human rights issues in the news, in order to bring issues/developments to the daily editorial meetings and suggest ideas for Amnesty International news output.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- Extensive, recent and relevant experience of working in a daily news environment.
- Familiarity with the world news agenda and good news judgment.
- Proven writing skills; familiarity with the principles of accuracy, objectivity and independence.
- Ability to produce news and feature content to high standard and very tight deadlines.
- Keen interest in and good knowledge of, world affairs and of current/developing issues and trends.
- Ability to operate within Amnesty International’s policies and guidelines at all times.
- Willingness to develop an area of specialism whether geographical or thematic.
- Desire to take the initiative in suggesting ideas for Amnesty International news and feature output.
- Experience of contributing ideas to editorial meetings, ability to defend and “sell” story ideas to editors and other key stakeholders.
- Good awareness of the needs and interests of international audiences.
- Strong awareness of tools and techniques for digital content creation, including social media, blogs and mobile.
- Working knowledge of media technologies and formats, including flash, multimedia and audio/video content.
- Knowledge of content-management systems and database applications.
- Willingness to keep up-to-date with developments in relevant digital technologies, undertaking training where necessary.
- Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to negotiate; Demonstrable commitment to a culture of coordinated and collaborative working.
- Experience of making best use of allocated resources.
- Knowledge of industry standards and best practice on issues of taste & decency; privacy; use of user-generated content, and the like.
- Interest in and understanding of human rights issues generally and of the changing way in which the debate about human rights is being framed.
- Knowledge of media law, incl. defamation, contempt of court.
- Experience of working in a multi-cultural environment and/or of working abroad.
- A good awareness of Amnesty International’s goals and missions or ability to acquire such knowledge quickly and efficiently.
- Some knowledge of, or readiness to acquire knowledge of, Amnesty International’s working languages apart from English: Spanish, French and Arabic.
