United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Economic Affairs Officer in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Economic Affairs Officer will work under the direct supervision of the Chief, Countries with Special Needs Section (CSNS) and the overall supervision of the Chief, MPDD.
ESCAP is the regional development arm of the United Nations for the Asia-Pacific region.
Key Job Responsibilities
The Economic Affairs Officer performs the following functions-
- Conducts and develops socio-economic analysis and databases and qualitative information necessary for the preparation of the Asia-Pacific Countries with Special Needs Development Report.
- Interprets, applies and, as necessary, adapts econometric models to determine trends, patterns and relationships and to analyze the effects of alternative policies and assumptions, especially for analyzing development issues pertaining to Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and Small Island Developing State (SIDS) in Asia and the Pacific region.
- Drafts specified inputs for technical papers and analytical studies on selected global, regional, national or sector aspects of economic development that are relevant to Istanbul Programme of Action for LDCs, Vienna programme of Action for LLDCs and Samoa Pathway for SIDS.
- Identifies and analyses policy proposals for the Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific, which are related to LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS in region.
- Attends international, regional, and national meetings to collect information and to hold discussions with colleagues in other institutions, such as United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (OHRLLS) and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
- Assists in the organization and servicing of expert group meetings, seminars, etc. on development issues.
- Prepares speeches and other inputs for presentations by senior staff.
- Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally.
- Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit’s services.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or related field.
- A relevant first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- PhD in economics is desirable.
- A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area is required.
- Experience in the above areas related to LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS is desirable Experience in the above areas in the Asia-Pacific region is desirable.
- Experience working in teams, developing technical assistance projects and preparation of reports for policy makers is desirable.
- Fluency in English is required. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
- Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
