United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) invites applications from the qualified candidates for the post of Public Information Officer. Fluency in English and Somali is required for the job .Knowledge of Arabic or Turkish is desirable. Please note that the vacancy is for Somali nationals only.Job location is Mogadishu, Somalia. Initial contract period is of one year.
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Support/conduct media relations and outreach with all stakeholders and target audiences.
- Research and advice on planning and design of internal and external strategies for communications.
- Advise and guide the management and staff with all aspects of field reporting and production of public information products.
Impact of Results :
The key results have an impact on the overall efficiency of the Country office including-
- Playing a strategic role in identifying trends related to humanitarian issues in the local Somali and international media.
- Developing innovative approaches to deal with reporting issues and ensure timely delivery of outputs, in accordance with overall objectives and policies of the Public Information Unit of OCHA Somalia.
- Serve as an effective support to OCHA Somali Public Information strategy and plans and strengthen partnerships with humanitarian actors to help meet OCHA’s objectives with respect to overall policy initiatives and coordination of humanitarian and emergency assistance.
Education:
- Master’s Degree in Communication/Journalism, political science or International Relations.
- Or A first-level university degree in above disciplines with a combination 4 years qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
- 2 years of relevant professional experience, preferably in complex emergency and inter-agency context, dealing with relief and transitional issues.
- Knowledge/working experience of humanitarian issues is highly desirable
- Basic Knowledge of journalism, social science, development or humanitarian relief issues is desirable.
- Computer proficiency, including working knowledge of e-mail and MS Office products (word, Excel, Power Point)
Language Requirements:
- Fluency in English and Somali is required. Knowledge of Arabic or Turkish is desirable.
