The Abe Fellowship is an annual competition organized jointly by the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP) and the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). The fellowship aims to develop a new generation of researchers to carry out research on policy-related topicson global concerns. Individuals with a PhD can submit proposals for the fellowship. The research agenda includes the themes: Traditional and Non-Traditional Approaches to Security and Diplomacy, Global and Regional Economic Issues and the Role of Civil Society.
The fellowship provides full-time support for up to 12 months and part-time residence abroad either in the US or Japan is required. The fellowship is primarily available for the residents of these two countries. However, nationals of other countries who can demonstrate serious and long-term relationship with research communities in these two countries can apply for the fellowship.
