The Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (Absa KKNK) is a South African festival for performing and visual arts, which is presented annually during the March/April school holidays in the town of Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo semi-desert region, about 400km North-East of Cape Town
The Absa KKNK invites artists, producers and other people who consider themselves cultural practitioners to send proposals for the compilation of the annual Absa KKNK 2012 programme. The 18th Absa KKNK program will be organized in Oudtshoorn from March 31, 2012 to April 7, 2012.
“The Absa KKNK welcomes proposals in a variety of genres, including drama, dance, musical theatre, music and visual arts but is especially interested in proposals that can be included in our Oudtshoorn Oraloor programme of place-specific theatre; that will increase the visibility of our arts programme in the streets and that works with themes that portray the diversity in Afrikaans,” says Brett Pyper, CEO of the festival.
According to Theo Kemp, Programme manager of the Absa KKNK, a new heritage project is being planned. “The main goal of the project is to explore local and regional stories and character through the arts, as well as developing the artistic talent in the broader Klein Karoo region in all ways possible.”
In principle, there are no restrictions as to which proposals will be considered. If a proposal has not been considered at the Absa KKNK yet or when it does not sit comfortably with the various existing genres, the merits of the proposal will be given preference beyond the administrative categories. In practice it means that the organization will try to align the recommendations of the assessment teams with the budget, venues, profile of the audiences and strategic goals. The latter is applied somewhat differently to the various genres which make up the programme.
Production houses, artists and other arts practitioners can submit proposals for performances during the 18th Absa KKNK program.
The application process is free of charge for artists.
The guidelines are open for discussion and that the purpose of this is to encourage creativity rather than to limit it. If you feel you have proposals and ideas that might contribute to the value of the programme, the organization looks forward hearing from you.
Last date for submitting the proposals is August 22, 2011.
