UNESCO has launched the call for nominations for the 2010 UNESCO International Literacy Prizes. The theme for this year’s prizes is “Literacy and Women’s Empowerment”.
These prestigious UNESCO Prizes are awarded to governments or governmental agencies, nongovernmental organizations maintaining official relations with UNESCO,* and in exceptional cases to individuals, in recognition of innovative and successful results in the field of literacy throughout the world.
The UNESCO International Literacy Prizes include four awards, totalling US$80,000:
- The King Sejong Literacy Prize (two prizes awarded) gives special consideration to the development and use of mother tongue languages.
- The Confucius Prize for Literacy (two prizes awarded) gives special consideration to literacy for people in rural areas and out-of-school youth.
Prizes are awarded during a ceremony held at UNESCO Headquarters on International Literacy Day (8 September) .
The 2009/2010 theme of the United Nations Literacy Decade is Literacy and empowerment, so this year’s call for candidatures will particularly welcome innovative and successful literacy projects and programs that promote women’s empowerment in particular, whether social, economic or political. Candidatures for 2010 Prizes should therefore address both the theme of literacy and women’s empowerment and the criteria for specific prizes.
