The international Civil Courage Prize is sponsored by the Train Foundation to honor “extraordinary individuals whose acts, undertaken deliberately, over time, have demonstrated ‘steadfast resistance to evil at great personal risk.’” The Prize does not attempt to establish a ranking or give the impression of a competition. Rather, it works to draw the attention of the people towards “some extraordinary heroes of conscience. Particularly, it seeks to establish the idea, and the words, of Civil Courage as a necessary bulwark of a good society. The prize does not take merely political positions. It only acclaims a few who resolutely combat evil, which is does not define: we know it when we see it.”
Nominations can be submitted by NGOs and nonprofit organizations from around the world for the Prize. Only one nomination can be submitted by one organization and unsolicited nominations are usually not considered. The Trustees make the final selection of the Prize recipient from the nominations submitted.
Solicited nominations should be in writing and include:
- The Nomination Form, including the candidate’s exact name and address, phone, fax and email, if available.
- A brief description of the acts to be honored (500 words or less).
- The names and addresses of several references.
- Any convenient documentary verification.
The nomination form can be downloaded from the Civil Courage Prize website. The deadline to submit nominations is 15 February 2011. For more information, visit this link.
