The Department for International Development (DFID) has launched the New and Emerging Technologies Research Competition “to identify the key challenges and barriers that may be reducing the impact of these technologies on the lives of poor people and help to identify some of the key technologies that could form the basis of further work.” Some of the example ideas identified include purifying drinking water, diagnosing and reducing the risk of disease, storing, producing and converting energy storage and improving food processing and storage in addition to exploring on the following:
What are the most effective, safe and affordable approaches to new technology that might benefit poor people, and what research is needed to turn these benefits into reality;
The competition will address:
- What is the best way to build on new and emerging technologies research for development outcomes?
- How can we manage the risks associated with this kind of research?
- What is the scale of the commitment to longer term funding that might need to be made in areas that are likely to have a high probability of high impact? Are they affordable and how do they fit with the thematic DFID research programme delivery mechanism?
- How can we support research that improves the uptake of this research?
Researchers from developing countries are encouraged to apply. The deadline to submit applications is 12 July 2010. For more information, visit this link.
