infoDev is seeking Expressions of Interest from firms to administer the online Mobile Microwork Challenge competition. The firms must have experience in crowdsourcing-style online idea competitions to implement and manage the technical infrastructure of the competition and to administer the awarding of prize money.
infoDev is a Global Partnership Program, coordinated and served by an expert Secretariat housed in the Finance and Private Sector Vice Presidency (FPDVP) of the World Bank Group (WBG). Its strategic goal is to promote sustainable inclusive growth, competiveness and jobs using technology-based tools, in particular information and communication technologies (ICTs).
Microwork refers to small digital tasks, such as transcribing hand-written text, or indicating whether two photos show the same building. Typically, the tasks can be completed in a few seconds, without special skills or training, but cannot be readily automated. Workers are typically paid a small amount of money for completing each task. In order for such work to be accessible from the developing world, it is important that it can be carried out using mobile devices in addition to PCs.
To help accelerate the market for applications that offer microwork using mobile phones, and to direct it towards fulfilling development goals, infoDev and its development partners will organize the said open online competition for ideas – the Mobile Microwork Challenge.
Scope of work
- The organization selected will undertake the following tasks:
- Design, implement, host and manage the technical infrastructure (home page) of the Mobile Microwork Challenge.
- Assist in marketing the competition, by reaching out to likely contestants and by creating a “buzz” around the competition, for instance through the use of social media.
- Conduct due diligence for each individual or organization participating in the competition.
- Provide online support for competition participants in how to use the technical infrastructure.
- Grant the prize monies specified in the rules to the winners as soon as practicable after the winners have been decided.
In addition, the organization should assist infoDev in defining the rules for the competition and facilitating the work of the judging panel.
Selection Procedure
Evaluation criteria will include experience in developing contest websites, creative marketing proposals, ability to add value to the competition and relevant experience and qualifications of individual staff members proposed.
Deadline for submitting the EOI is June 13, 2011
