The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) initiative entitled the International Climate Initiative (IKI) makes funding support for climate and biodiversity projects in developing and newly industrializing countries along with the countries in transition. IKI was created to support projects in Germany that contribute to the successful transformation of Germany’s energy system, while harnessing existing potentials for cost-effectively reducing emissions. Annually, the initiative grants at least EUR120 million to support climate and biodiversity projects that suit under the framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Cross-cutting Theme:
- Private Investment
- Promotion of Sustainable Business Models for Climate Protection
- Biodiversity Conservation Measures
The Climate Change and Biodiversity Conservation Projects support by the IKI in developing, newly industrializing and transition countries (termed as partner countries) is in line with the German Government’s existing international, multilateral and bilateral cooperation. The supported projects are ambitious, transformative and/or innovative addressing the needs of the partner countries and supporting them in reducing greenhouse gases, building capacity to adapt to the impacts of climate change and conserving and making sustainable use of forests and other ecosystems (carbon sinks), in particular REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation).
Kind of Supports:
- Technology Cooperation
- Policy Advice and Capacity Development
- Preparation of Studies and Strategies
- Implementation of Measures for Climate Protection and Conserving Biodiversity
The IKI helps partner countries implement Strategic Plan 2011-2020 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to promote effectively and sustainably the attainment of the Aichi Targets established by the Strategic Plan. IKI aims to create as many synergies as possible between climate change protection and biodiversity conservation.
Priority:
Assist partner countries throughout the process of formulating and concretizing their mitigation contributions and establishing suitable national conditions for the effective realization of such contributions.
