The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is now accepting applications for the 2011-2012 Reagon-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program. The program was established in the year 2001 in honor of its principal founders, former president Ronald Reagan and the late congressman, Dante Fascell. The program receives funding from the US Congress to increase awareness and understanding of democracy around the world. Every year it announces a call for applications from democratic practitioners, scholars and journalists around the world to take up full-time residence at the International Forum for Democratic Studies located in Washington D.C. The Forum is the research arm of NED.
The Forum hosts 16 to 20 Reagan-Fascell Fellows per year, divided into two five-month sessions:
- the Fall session starts on October 1 and ends on February 28
- the Spring session begins on March 1 and ends on July 31
Democratic activists, human rights advocates, journalists, professors and researchers from around the world are eligible to apply these fellowships. Fellows selected for the program will have the opportunity to spend the fellowship period in a collegial environment to reflect on their experiences and consider lessons learned, conduct research and writing, develop contacts and exchange ideas with counterparts in Washington D.C. and build ties that contribute to the development of a global network of democracy advocates.
Each fellow receives a monthly stipend for living expenses, plus health insurance and reimbursement for travel to and from Washington, D.C., at the beginning and end of the fellowship period. Fellows also receive a fully equipped office and research support through the Forum’s Democracy Resource Center and the Research Associates Program.
The applications period for fellowships in 2011-2012 begins from 1 August 2010. There is an online application system designed for submission of applications. The deadline to make the submission is 1 November 2010. For more information, visit this link.
