The ‘MDG Summit,’ a High-level Plenary Meeting is to be held from 20-22 September 2010. As part of providing inputs to the preparatory process, the UN General Assembly has requested the President of its 64th session to convene “Informal Interactive Hearings of the General Assembly with Non-governmental organizations, Civil society organizations and the Private sector.” The Hearings will take place from 14-15 June 2010 at the UN Headquarters in New York.

There is a Trust Fund established to support the participation of NGOs and civil society representatives from developing countries for the Hearings. There is also a Task Force of such representatives for advising the GA President on the format and participation of the Hearings. It is expected that such a programme will facilitate interactions between Member States and the representatives from NGOs and civil society groups from developing countries. Although the format of the Hearings has not yet been framed, it will take “the stocks of the status of implementation of the MDGs ; emerging issues and challenges such as climate change and the global financial, economic and food crises; lessons learnt to accelerate progress at national and international levels; and an action-oriented agenda for the summit.” The issues to be discussed will be related to “poverty, hunger and gender equality; health and education; sustainable development; emerging issues and evolving approaches; the special needs of the most vulnerable; and widening and strengthening partnerships.”

Nominations can be made through the nomination form available online at the link given below. The deadline to submit nominations is 16 April 2010. For more information, visit this link.
