Organizations and individuals from the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) member countries can apply for the SAARC Award 2009 which honours individuals and organizations working for the promotion of peace, understanding, friendship and development in the region. The award honours efforts that have been made in the fields of peace, development, social service, poverty alleviation, environment protection, cultural progress and in other agreed areas of regional cooperation in the region. The work of the organizations and individuals complimenting to the SAARC objectives and mission are recognized through this award.
The SAARC award has a cash prize of US $25,000 for the winner along with a citation and a gold medal, which will be presented in a ceremony held at the regional level. Only nominations are accepted based on the form available from the website. Along with the form, a summary sheet of not more than two pages should also be submitted. The award strongly discourages recommendation letters from serving Heads of State/Government. Nominations have to be sent by mail to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Sri Lanka, which is hosting this award. The last date to apply for the award is 10 October 2009.
