The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) had established the Tsunami Regional Trust Fund in 2005 in response to the destructive Indian Ocean Tsunami which occurred in December 2004. The Fund is the outcome fo the need for an effective regional disaster preparedness mechanism in the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia.
It works to “contribute to narrowing the capacity gaps in the region and ensure development of an integrated regional early warning system based on adequate resources, and comprising a network of collaborative centres connected to sub-regional, regional, and national centres and linked to other existing centres outside the region, such as those in the Pacific Ocean.”
The Trust Fund is currently accepting proposals under its sixth round of funding from NGOs, intergovernmental organizations and governments to implement projects in the ESCAP Indian Ocean and Southeast Asian countries from Iran to Timor-Leste for a period of two years. A grant application form is available which can be downloaded from the UNESCAP website.
The deadline to submit the project proposals is 15 August 2010. For more information, visit this link.
