The Africa Youth Trust in partnership with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute is organizing the training program on the Equal Status and Human Rights of Women in East Africa (EAHUWO). The program is sponsored by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). It will be held from 2nd to 16th May 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya. Representatives from civil society organizations and government agencies, “preferably in middle to senior level management, with the proven ability (or demonstrated potential) to design and influence the policy-making and national reform processes on issues of human rights of women.” from Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda are invited to participate in the program. They should be nominated by their organizations or institutions.
The aim of the program is to advance “discussions and actions on international and regional mechanisms for the protection of women’s human rights, and women’s role in national peacebuilding and democratic governance in East Africa. The EAHUWO 2010 training program also seeks to contribute towards sustainable development by strengthening the capacities of participating civil society organizations and government agencies in East Africa to develop and implement policies and legislation to promote and protect the human rights of women.”
The topics to be covered in the training are:
- Concepts of Gender Equality
- Equal rights, non-discrimination and special measures
- Women in national peace building and democratic governance.
- International, regional and national instruments and mechanisms
- Role of women in the national reform processes.
- Violence against women and transitional justice.
- Human Rights-based approach to programming.
