The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Southern Africa is seeking grant applications from eligible local Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) for implementation of a three-year program. The program is aimed towards strengthening the capacity of Victims of Torture (VOT) service providers so that they can provide effective care, treatment and rehabilitation to people who experienced the physical and psychological effects of torture.
Objectives of the project
– to increase access to services that improve functioning in torture affected individuals and communities
– to improve quality of interventions for torture affected individuals and communities through the study of the impact of interventions.
Expected/Anticipated Results
– Increased number of victims of torture who receive clinical treatment and rehabilitation services.
– Increased number of victims of torture service providers who receive training on improved methods of treatment.
– Increased capacity of victims of torture service providers throughout Africa to monitor and assess their programs and develop effective treatment models.
Illustrative Countries of Engagement
The Victims of Torture program will take place in South Africa; however, program beneficiaries will be drawn from torture survivors from South Africa and from other countries in Africa who are currently located in South Africa.
Eligibility Conditions
This competition is limited to LOCAL NGOs, including non-profit and for-profit organizations.
In support of the Agency’s interest in fostering a larger assistance base and expanding the number and sustainability of development partners, USAID encourages applications from potential new partners.
To be eligible for this program, potential applicants must:
– be a Local Non-Governmental Organization organized (i.e. founded not merely registered) under the laws of South Africa.
– attach official documentation of their formal legal status as a South African NGO.
Local NGOs are not required to register with USAID. Local NGO applicants may be non-profit or for-profit organizations; however no profit will be allowed under this award. Additionally, when considering making an award to an NGO with limited or no previous USAID experience, the USAID might determine to conduct a pre-award survey which is a risk assessment to determine the organization’s capabilities to complete the proposed activities.
Last date for submitting the applications is August 25, 2011.
