The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) has announced the 2009 Annual Grant Competition for NGOs and individuals around the world (“American and foreign individuals and nonprofit organizations may apply”) with a funding range from $50,000 to $120,000. The grant program provides funding support to “innovative peacebuilding projects” that can cover research, models, practices, education, training and even production of media programs. The topics covered under this grant program are: Conflict analysis and prevention; Mediation and conflict resolution; Postconflict peace and stability operations; Religion and peacemaking; Women and girls in conflict and peacebuilding; Rule of law and transitional justice; Economies and conflict; Social, psychological, and physical impacts of war and conflict; and Media and conflict.
Individuals apply for this grant need to get associated with an NGO in order to manage the fund. Since the grant opportunity is available for both US and non-US organizations, NGOs in countries other than US need to provide proof of their nonprofit status while applying for the funding. Applications can be submitted online but prior registration may required at the website for all eligible applicants. USIP is flexible with the applicant organizations and the countries from where proposals can be submitted. It has not identified any priorities for organizations to apply. However, USIP will review the project in context of the its institutional mandate. Activities such as “policy-oriented research, dialogue, education and training projects, conferences, workshops, Track II mediations, library development and media projects (such as documentary films, TV and radio programs, as well as print media projects)” are eligible to be funded under this program. The last date to submit proposals is 1 October 2009. For more information, visit this link.
