Investigative Fund grant recipients publish their findings in a variety of print, broadcast and electronic outlets. Editors accept proposals from both reporters and editors. Assigning editors may query on behalf of reporters or reporters may query directly.
The Investigative Fund at The Nation Institute is dedicated to improve the scope as well as overall quality of investigative reporting in the independent press and beyond. The Investigative Fund supports significant investigative stories with the potential for social impact, particularly on issues that may be bypassed by the mainstream media. The Investigative Fund does this by providing reporters with editorial guidance, institutional support, and grants to cover the research costs associated with investigative journalism.
It is standard for grants to go to the reporter or producer to cover direct costs associated with an investigative project, though occasionally make grants to non-profit publications or to journalism graduate programs to support team-reported stories.
The first step in applying is to email us a story query and a budget request. It’s useful to include information about what’s new and enterprising about the research, your reporting approach, the story’s potential impact, and what publication or broadcast outlet is interested in the piece. If the query is liked, the candidate will fill out simple application form. This fund typically meet once a month, or as needed, to review proposals. Decision-making process is designed to be informal and supportive.
