In Social Work I am a founder of an NGO, SOAP (Springboard Orphan Aid Programme), which works with guardians of 200 children who have lost both parents to create a favourable environment that enables the children to become competitive as children and later as adults. Deriving from its parental thrust, the organization uses the approach named “OCTAGONS” meaning “Orphan Care Through Assisting Guardian-Organized Networking Syndicates”. This self-explanatory approach builds the capacity of guardians of guardians to provide wholistic care to orphaned children and to take a prominent role in their development. All interventions adminstered to the disadvantaged children are formulated in the consultation process that involves guardians primarily and other members of the community at a secondary level. In conjunction with guardians, the organization provides the vulnerable children with:
– educational assistance
– psychosocial support
– income-generating facilities
– motivational and talent development services
– health care support
– children’s rights knowledge and safety-nets
Instead of developing the capacity of the volunteers and other community members to watch over the welfare of orphaned children SOAP primarily advocates the capacity-building of the guardians who are the unavoidable companions of the children. They determine the home environment of the children and they are central in setting up the family which is the primary institution of socialization for all human beings, including children. Other community members are included in the welafre of the child at a secondary level.Guardians provide both motivation during prospective challenges and solace during dispair.
SOAP has organized all the guardians of orphaned children into multi-purpose syndicates or small groups that are accountable to one another on matters of child care. They also share ideas on tackling challenges of orphan care.
SOAP requests support from interested and concerned organizations to ensure that noble dream of turning orphaned children into competitive children and later on adults.
