- More than 80% of the population in India works in the informal sector and just about 20% in the formal sector. Nearly 50% of the people in Indonesia and Thailand for the non-agricultural labour force working in the informal sector. In the Philippines, about 63% of the people belong to this economy. - In developing countries, nearly one-half or more of employed people belong to the informal economy: 48% in North Africa, 51% in Latin America, 65% in Asia and 72% in sub-Saharan Africa.
- Informal employment is comprises of both self-employment informal enterprises (i.e. small and/or unregistered) and wage employment informal jobs (i.e. without secure contracts, worker benefits or social protection). In all developing regions, self-employment comprises of a greater share (60-70%) of informal employment (outside of agriculture) than wage employment.
- Informal employment is a larger source of employment for women than men in Africa (84% of women workers) and Latin America (58% of women workers).
