A New Generation of NGOs
World NGO Day is supported by some of the leading development organisations in the world including the European Commission, UN Women, UNDP and UNESCO.
Mr Andris Pebalgs, European Commissioner for Development, has spoken out in support of the event “NGOs have always been at the forefront of social movements and changes. The European Commission greatly values their willingness to act, their independence and above all their deep and genuine concern for the well-being of the communities they serve. As European Commissioner for Development I have special admiration for the activities that development NGOs carry out, often in very dangerous environments.
I’m glad to see that the relationship between the Commission and NGOs, which has evolved rapidly and stretches back over 30 years, is now moving towards a genuine partnership. On every single day of the year, all over the world, NGOs are working hard for the people and communities they have pledged to help. It’s only right that, on just one of those days, the world should celebrate NGOs and thank them for the tremendous work that they do”.
2015 and beyond
Embarking on the post 2015 development agenda will require increased levels of collaboration among all stakeholders, the likes of which we have not seen before. Todays challenges require collective efforts, as well as a willingness to innovate, to evaluate what works best, and to learn from the experiences of others. Let us, as NGOs and representatives of civil society, take the lead through innovative strategies and effective, sustainable partnerships for action.
