United Nations Women’s Fund (UNIFEM) announced the grantee organizations of its Fund for Gender Equality under the Implementation Grants Category. The Fund for Gender Equality is “dedicated to furthering the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), including the commitment that gender equality and women’s empowerment are goals in their own right and central to all other development goals” and its Implementation Grants Category “aims to fast track action on national laws and policies to advance gender equality.” Some of the organizations projects receiving grants have been mention below.
The RCN Justice et Democratie and HAGURUKA Association for the Defence of Women and Children’s Rights in Rwanda are jointly implementing a project to address women’s right to access land and is setting up “an elaborate mobile paralegal network that will support 100,000 claimants and through active engagement and dialogue with men and traditional leaders.”
Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Market Women’s Fund will rebuild war-destroyed 18 markets that will “respond to market women’s most pressing priorities, including health care, development of business skills, literacy, early childhood education and care for their children.”
In Zimbabwe, Gender Budgeting and Women’s Empowerment Programme implemented by Zimbabwe Women’s Resource Centre and Network (ZWRCN) will be “lobbying for increased budget allocations to finance women’s priorities in 32 selected sector ministries and working with civil society organizations to enact gender-budget monitoring and accountability mechanisms.”
The Mexican Strengthening Women’s Political Participation and Promoting an Economic Empowerment Agenda implemented by Equidad de Género: Ciudadanía, Trabajo y Familia (Gender Equality: Citizenship, Work and Family) will work to “increase the number of women in decision-making positions across 10 states.”
In Egypt, the Ministry of Manpower and Emigration and The Social Research Center- The American University in Cairo will be working on a model called Gender Equity Seal with the basic idea of promoting the career and entrepreneurial opportunities for women.
In Cambodia, Cambodia Health Education Media Services (CHEMS) and Cambodian HIV/AIDS Education and Care (CHEC) are implementing the “Strengthening Economic Livelihood Opportunities for Poor Women and 1300 HIV Positive Women.”
Indian organizations PRADHAN and JAGORI will be working on improving livelihood access for poor and marginalized women and promoting their participation in the local governance structures.
