The research project will focus on networking practices in specific types of intra-organizational networks. Affinity networks are identity-based networks geared towards information and support for organization members with similar identities. These affinity networks are either created by management or by diverse members of the organization in order to facilitate the inclusion and development of people with different identities in the organization. There are women’s networks, minority networks, and networks for younger, older and GLBT employees.
As a PhD student, the candidate will examine how the networking practices in multiple affinity networks contribute to the creation of an inclusive workplace and on the development of diverse organization members.
The PhD project is part of a larger research programme that contributes to our knowledge on organized human activities of building and using relationships at work. In this research programme, several projects on networking and inequalities are conducted to study the dynamic, socio-political actions of people when they build and use their relations at work.
The Nijmegen School of Management (NSM) is an academic centre of research and higher learning, focusing on institutional and managerial issues within complex organizations in both the public and private domain. There are seven focus areas within the NSM: Business Administration, Public Administration, Political Science, Economics, Social and Political Sciences of the Environment, Human Geography, and Spatial Planning. The NSM strives for a multi-disciplinary approach whenever possible. Altogether, the NSM employs 220 full-time staff, of whom 75% are academics. The NSM has about 3,000 students.
The Institute for Management Research (IMR) conducts fundamental and applied research on the development, design and effectiveness of the public and private structures that regulate, govern and manage human interaction. These structures exist at various levels, ranging from societies to urban networks and from macro-economic systems to individual organizations and firms.
The candidate should have a Master’s degree in Management or Social Sciences and be interested in, and have knowledge of, network research and issues of gender and diversity. The candidate has excellent skills in research, planning, writing and presentation (in English). Advanced skills in qualitative research are essential, and experience in quantitative research is a plus.

· The gross starting salary amounts to € 2,042 per month based on full-time employment, and will increase to € 2,612 per month in the fourth year;
· Duration of the contract: 4 years;
· The candidate will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years;
· The candidate will be classified as a PhD student (promovendus) in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO).
