One year sandwich PhD scholarships are especially organized for Brazilian students to come to the UK to study for a sandwich PhD course. Brazilian students coming to the UK for a sandwich PhD course must have completed at least one year of their PhD studies. This usually represents about 30%.
Students will be spending twelve months in the UK carrying out research relevant to their PhD focus. This research needs to be agreed between the student, their supervisor in Brazil and the host university in the UK. Universities may wish to consider establishing a range of collaborative opportunities including industrial partnerships and the possibility of arranging a co-tutelle agreement with a Brazilian partner institution for the joint supervision of students.
Step 1: The International Unit (IU) have published information about which UK Universities are interested in hosting PhD students and in which subjects click here. We will also publish background information on the universities, English language requirements where specified and the number of opportunities in each university.
Step 2: Students need to complete a Science without Borders PhD Information Form. UUK will share this information with a number of universities before advising the student which universities to contact about PhD opportunities. The completed form should be sent by email to swbapply@international.ac.uk.
Step 3: Our PhD Scholarships Manager will advise on good matches and give contact details for appropriate university departments so that students can contact potential supervisors.
Step 4: Sandwich PhD students will then need to contact these universities and discuss the possibility of a 12 month project. This discussion should include their supervisor at their home university and the proposed supervisor at the UK University. A student may wish to have this discussion with more than one university.
Step 5: Once a PhD sandwich placement is agreed the UK University will make an offer directly to the student and will also inform the International Unit by making sure to include ‘Sandwich PhD offer’ in the subject line.
Step 6: Students then need to work with their supervisors in Brazil to submit a proposal directly to Ciencia sem fronteiras in order to apply for funding. The proposal must be submitted by the supervisor in Brazil. Applications for entry between October 2012 and January 2013 must be submitted to Ciencia sem fronteiras by 29 June.
Step 7: When a Sandwich PhD grant proposal has been successful, Ciencia sem fronteiras in Brazil will notify UUK so the grant can be administered.
Deadline for applications: 29 June, 2012
