Description of your project for resolving water & sanitation problems?
Description of water & sanitation problems of your local area
Sind province is at the tail end of river Indus and the only drinking water (Fresh) source for the local community is either the ground water or the canal water used for irrigation, there is very little to no water supply from the government at remote village level. Our chosen area of Village XXX.
District of is a village of around 150 households and 900 inhabitants. The ground water is sore and not drinkable and the village is at the tail end of the canal and once on average 10 days receives some water through this flow, the villagers are unable to store the water sufficient enough and long enough to last for the next 10 days till the arrival of next tranche in the canal. The poverty level are extreme and no one individual or organization is in a position to construct the reservoir at his or her own. This project aims at providing the fresh water around the clock to the local villagers and to fulfill one of their long time demands of drinking and house chores water availability.
Description of your project plan for resolving these water & sanitation problems mentioned in Q1 with the help of grants from fund:
Project Name:
Construction of small drinking water storage cum distribution center and capacity-building training for its maintenance
Project Location: XXXXX
Objectives of your Project:
The objective of our proposal is to provide fresh drinking water to around 900 people of our target area. With construction of storage and distribution facility the community will have around the clock availability of fresh water, currently people of the village travel as far as 3000 meters (and 2 hours walk) for drinking water and water related diseases and issues are on the rise due to partly non availability of fresh water and secondly due to consumption of substandard water as available at the local level
Details of your project:
Our project is divided primarily in to two phases, one would be the construction of storage tank and hand water pump for the distribution network. We are planning a 10 X 10 meter and 5 meter depth concrete storage tank at the tail end of the canal that is there for the irrigation purposes. The canal water is the only above or underground fresh water available in the vicinity and we have to properly utilize that. We estimate that once filled this water would be sufficient enough for at least 12 days of drinking and households chores of the village community. The project is expected to be completed in 3 days and the project is divided in to following tasks
- Days 0-3: Community mobilization and selection of trained and skilled labour from the community (As community Contribution) for the construction of concrete paved pond that will be used for the storage of the water.
- Days 4-20: Construction of water storage pond (Paved concrete).
- Days 21-25: Installation of hand pumps for the distribution mechanism, and collection point.
- Days: 26-27: Community hands on training for the proper usage of the facility and sustainability of the product for the longer run.
- Days 28-30: Community handover of the facility with proper maintenance mechanism provided.
The project directly relates with the water and drinking water availability objectives of Water forum and we do hope that with available funding the long term community benefits would results in greater good for the stakeholders.
Prospective positive impact of your project on these water & sanitation problems mentioned Q1:
Water is one of the basic needs for every human being. Our proposal and proposed intervention is aimed at providing this basic necessity to around 900 people who are facing water scarcity and resultantly are faced with various issues such as nutritional deficiency, cholera, and other water related diseases. Our project would ensure 24 hours around the clock availability of fresh drinking water at village level to all the 900 or so beneficiaries. The water as tested is better than the water the villagers are currently drinking and this would ensure lesser people to affect with water related diseases.
Number of direct beneficiaries of your project:
There are a total of 150 households in the Village, where project is proposed. A total of 225 Men (above the age of 18), 210 boys (under the age of 18), 254 Women (above the age of 18) and 217 girls (under the age of 18) are direct project beneficiaries.
Stakeholder Participation:
Primarily at ground level 3 stake holders would be involved, the local administration would be contacted to get No objection Certificate for the construction of storage tank/pond and that we expect to get in no time as already community participation and need is there that would ensure we get the NOC soon. Second contribution would be that of Community it and we expect to involve community at each stage of project design and implementation. The community would be asked also to contribute to project directly in the shape of direct labour, as we see the enough expert level expertise for basic construction activities are available in town for the project to be executed at local level. Lastly the would be using its community mobilization, and human as well as technical resources to coordinate all project activities and achieve the desired project objectives as required.
Sustainability:
As the project is community driven and need of each and every resident of xxxxx village so they won’t foresee any issues as far as project long term sustainability is concern, once after the completion of project activities on ground the facility will be handed over to the community through the representation of community based organization. Local village level discussion forum and participants do already exists at the village and the same group of people would be responsible for the overall maintenance of the storage tank and hand pump for distribution. As very little recurring cost would be there in the equation so whatever little would be there to incur on the facility on and off will be contributed by the community. Periodic water testing would be carried out with the help of officers and social mobilisers to ensure the long term positive impact on health.
