An Overview
Pneumonia is the number one killer of children under age 5 worldwide and especially in Ghana. It claims the lives of young children in the urban rural areas each year especially where access to health care is limited. These deaths are especially tragic because solutions do not exist to save young lives through early warning system in the rural communities. Interventions such as immunization, good nutrition and sanitation practices like hand washing, exclusive breastfeeding, proper caregiver education, effective and affordable treatment will be part of the education to reduce this death toll and protecting children and preventing pneumonia and Diarrhea through treatment will in a long way help eradicate Pneumonia. A Survey on Pneumonia Treatment carried out in 2006 in Ghana indicates that
-
- 6% of children who had symptoms of pneumonia were taken to an appropriate provider
- 33% of children under-5 years suspected to be infected with pneumonia receive an antibiotic treatment.
- Generally, treatment of suspected pneumonia with an antibiotic is very low among poor households in Ghana.
- Only 2.8% of women knew of the two danger signs of pneumonia.

What are you doing on Date……?
The Day will be commemorated with a Durbar at the Dangbe West of the Grater Accra Region hosting 500 people made up of Herbalist, Traditional Birth Attendance and Faith groups. The key note address will be made by the District Health Director and the Member of Parliament of the District amidst Drama on Pneumonia and Cultural Dance.
Ghana has just introduced two new vaccines during the commemoration of the African Vaccination week in April 2012 which have great potentials to improve child health and saves lives. These are the pneumococcal vaccine which will protect children from pneumonia, ear infection and meningitis whilst the rotavirus vaccine protects against diarrhoea caused by rotavirus. This laudable initiative needs to amplify to the entire country.
Aim
The project is aimed at mobilizing 500 key people including Herbalist, Traditional birth Attendants (TBA) Queen Mothers and Islamic Mallams to prevent Pneumonia at homes, schools and at child friendly care centers especially at remote communities by bringing them to inform about symptoms, causes, prevention and care for pneumonia in order to reduce the mortality rate in Ghanaian Children.
And to let families become aware of the need to detect and prevent the occurrence of Pneumonia and diarrhoea at homes through drama as a creative medium expose the stumbling blocks that prevent the public from having access to protection, prevention and treatment measures. The program will invite speakers the district health Directorate to talk to the audience on Pneumonia and Diarrhoea diseases.
What problem is it trying to solve?
The problem of Pneumonia in Ghana has been a headache to rural hard to reach communities families. Some of these problems such as unclean environment has led to the outbreak of Pneumonia and water borne diseases like Cholera and intestinal worm infections. In Ghana children between 0 to 5 years die due to water borne diseases like diarrhoea and Pneumonia. Children have been sick of Pneumonia due to not washing their hands after visiting the toilets and they use the same hands to eat food that they have bought. They sometimes eat this food and fruits that have not been covered or cleaned properly with dust and flies depositing germs on them, Children go without washing their hands in their communities. The innovation project will put in place a user-friendly system that will remind on signs, symptoms and treatment as well as the controlling of Pneumonia in the communities through proper hygiene practices like hand washing.

The project will conduct a community DURBAR with a cross section at the grass root level people involving farmers, churches, and mosque heads, teachers, chiefs, queen-mothers, opinion leaders, herbalists, faith groups, students and heads of social groups. These groups are known to be vulnerable in care and support of children in their communities of mainly farming and fishing along the sea shore coastal line. The district is known to have several traditional healers who come in contact with children for herbal treatment of various health problems including pneumonia for medications.
The rational to educate the Traditional people in the community is due our activities at the communities for the past 6 years in creating awareness on Tuberculosis and the discovery of the unorthodox medicinal practices drug peddlers in their communities with regards to the treatment of children when sick of Pneumonia or diarrhoea. These herbalists are the first line of call when children are sick at homes at night and at the day time. They therefore need to be educated on the pneumonia signs symptoms and treatment of child hood diseases.
How will you encourage individuals and organizations to get involved in your events?
