Introduction
Background and Rationale
Many fragile states across the world face persistent instability due to deep-rooted ethnic, political, and economic conflicts. Young people, who make up a significant portion of the population in these regions, are often disproportionately affected by violence, poverty, and displacement. However, they also represent a key demographic that, if empowered, can play a transformative role in fostering peace and reconciliation. Youth are uniquely positioned to drive change at the community level, as they are more likely to engage in innovative solutions and bridge divides between conflicting groups.
Despite their potential, youth are frequently marginalized from peacebuilding processes and decision-making. This project aims to address this gap by creating youth-led initiatives that encourage young leaders to take an active role in fostering peace and social cohesion. By supporting youth participation in peacebuilding efforts, we can ensure that the next generation is equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to build a more stable and cohesive society.
Objectives
The project has the following key objectives:
- Empower Youth as Peacebuilders: Train 500 youth in conflict resolution, mediation, and peacebuilding skills to equip them to lead grassroots peace initiatives in their local communities.
- Promote Social Cohesion: Facilitate 50 youth-led community dialogues and workshops that bring together young people from diverse backgrounds to foster mutual understanding, tolerance, and cooperation.
- Support Social Entrepreneurship: Establish and support 30 youth-led social enterprises aimed at addressing socioeconomic drivers of conflict, such as poverty, unemployment, and inequality, providing sustainable livelihoods and reducing violence.
- Advocate for Youth Inclusion in Peace Processes: Engage with local governments, NGOs, and international bodies to promote the inclusion of youth perspectives in formal peacebuilding processes and decision-making platforms.
- Build Community Resilience: Strengthen the capacity of communities to resolve conflicts peacefully by supporting youth-driven initiatives that address the root causes of violence and instability.
