Introduction
The COVID-19 or Coronavirus crisis has made a tremendous cross-sectoral impact across most of the countries around the world. The entire social, economic and cultural structure is gradually transforming into an unexpected reality. Poor communities have become more vulnerable to the basic issues of livelihood, hunger, housing and shelter.
International and local donor agencies, corporates and governments have announced several new multi-million grant programs across different countries to address not just the health problems but also the overall facets of life that have been affected to COVID-19.
Like for many others, the current crisis is also a challenging situation for NGOs. Just like businesses, NGOs have been affected by the lockdowns, movement of restriction, difficulties in accessing necessary resources and the fear and panic of the declining donor funding. You can learn how to manage your NGOs in such a crisis here.
Project Background
An ongoing outbreak of infection by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), termed as COVID-19, aroused the attention of the entire world. The first infected case of coronavirus was reported on December 31, 2019, in Wuhan, China; within few weeks, infections spread across China and to other countries around the world. On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, which was the 6th declaration of its kind in WHO history. Surprisingly, during the first week of March 2020, devastating numbers of new cases were reported globally, and the WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a “pandemic” on March 11. The outbreak has now spread to more than 200 countries, areas, or territories beyond China. SARS-CoV-2 is a novel strain of the coronavirus family that has not been previously identified in humans (7). The disease spreads through person-to-person contact, and the posed potential public health threat is very high. Estimates indicated that COVID-19 could cost the world more than $10 trillion, although considerable uncertainty exists concerning the reach of the virus and the efficacy of the policy response.
The spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) is the most serious global health security threat in decades. More than 200,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported to WHO, and more than 8000 people have lost their lives. More than 80% of all cases are from two regions – the Western Pacific and Europe. Our hearts go out to all who have been affected by the outbreak, and we are deeply grateful to the thousands of healthcare workers who are on the front lines helping their communities. The current outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) got reported first from Wuhan, China, on 31 December 2019. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new virus that had not been previously identified in humans. COVID-19 has been declared as a pandemic by WHO due to the alarming levels of spread and severity. Till date, there is no specific medicine to treat or prevent COVID-19. The outbreak of new coronavirus disease (COVID‑19) is causing respiratory illness worldwide, prompting the WHO to declare the condition as a global pandemic. The virus has spread to more than 200 countries.
The outbreak is already infecting economies and financial markets around the world. While governments try to navigate the fine line between being prepared and setting off panic, the economic costs are growing as countries and communities try to control the spread of the disease. As the world further shuts down in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, NGOs around the globe are stepping up efforts to tackle the problems arising out of this contagion by ensuring continuous livelihood access to the poor communities, provision of necessary resources such as food and shelter (especially for the homeless and migrants), spreading mass awareness on prevention and reducing panicking at the community-level.
Project Goal & Objectives
Make sure that your goal and objectives are related to the problem you mentioned about under the project background and to the activities you wish to implement. For example, in light of the above project background, you can outline your goal and objectives as:
The ultimate goal of this project is to reduce morbidity and mortality due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) and to interrupt its transmission of this virus.
Objectives
- Increase community awareness on the prevention and spread of the COVID-19 diseases
- Reduce panicking and disinformation caused by the spread of the COVID-19 disease
- Ensuring the supply of basic resources such as food and shelter to the poorest and the needy
Project Strategy and Activities
- Weekly health check-ups of drivers who are delivering essential food items in the district
- P.E. kits to sanitation workers and delivery of essentials at the doorstep is another initiative
- Handwashing: Proper handwashing is particularly important because it is such a critical step in preventing the spread of germs
- Hand Sanitizer: The CDC notes that this can be a useful alternative if soap and water are not readily available, as long as it contains at least 60 percent alcohol.
- Disinfecting: There are a number of disinfectant and cleaning products that can be effective against the novel coronavirus on hard, nonporous surfaces, in accordance with the EPA Viral Emerging Pathogen Policy.
- Media Distancing: To stop the spread of COVID-19, we’ve had to practice social distancing. But to stop the spread of anxiety, we must distance ourselves from the media. All anxiety stems from uncertainty and an active imagination which produces catastrophic thoughts
- Be Kind to Yourself and Others and Have Faith: It’s normal to feel anxious and worried during a national crisis. Reaching out to relatives and friends who are isolated or in need will boost their spirits and yours. If you are in good financial standing, be grateful and continue to pay others for the services they cannot provide. If you are experiencing an escalation of anxiety, talk to a professional who can help you through this difficult time.
- Seek Out Professional Help: You don’t need to do this alone. Almost all therapists are using telehealth, so you are not limited to professionals in your area. Medication for anxiety, depression, and insomnia might also be needed and can be prescribed by a psychiatrist or your primary care physician.
- Engage in Stress Reduction Activities
- Focus on Being Productive and New Ways of Enjoying Life
