This project is related to the economic empowerment of Mentally challenged people. The overall objective of the project is Contribute to improving the living conditions of the mentally ill with the specific objective include to reduce generalized poverty among the mentally ill and thus increase their purchasing power and contribute to the self-financing and self-promotion of people with mental disorders. This sample want to achieve results like the purchasing power of the mental patients, members of organisation will be increased and their indigence will be reduced, Increasing the self-esteem of beneficiaries; Reduction of numbers of hospitalized patients, The continuity of the treatment and an economic independence of the mentally ill. The project “Breeding laying hens” consists of raising 500 laying hens in the framework of self-financing and self-promotion of the mentally ill members. This breeding pullet is a project generating income for members of the association who live in the town hall of Bujumbura. Afterwards, the project will be decentralized.
Context and Justification of the Project
Burundi is a poor country. The Human Development Index ranks one hundred and sixty-seven out of one hundred and seventy-seven countries according to 2010 UNDP statistics. While agriculture and livestock play a key role in any poverty reduction strategy, Burundi has one of the highest rates of chronic malnutrition in Africa and the world.
As for the mentally ill, they are extremely vulnerable:
- Most mental illnesses are chronic from which treatment should never be interrupted;
- The stay in hospital is long: on average 30 days;
- Medications are very expensive (e.g., a monthly dose costs 70.000fbu); plus, the cost of living in Bujumbura and traveling expenses, the cost is around 100.000fbu per month;
- The inaccessibility of mental health care because of the widespread poverty of families whose families suffer from mental illnesses.
- Having realized the problematic situation mentioned above, XXXXXXXX would like to present a breeding project for laying hens.
Description of the Project
The project « Breeding laying hens » consists of raising 500 laying hens in the framework of self-financing and self-promotion of the mentally ill; members of the xxxxxxxx This breeding pullet is a project generating income for members of the association who live in the town hall of Bujumbura. Afterwards, the project will be decentralized. The proceeds from this breeding will be used for the continuation of the project, then for the purchase of medicines for the poor members of XXXXXXXX, and finally to initiate the project in the antennas of the association of the interior of the country and even in the families of the mentally ill.

- Geographical rental : Bujumbura Municipality, Ntahangwa commune, Gihosha zone in Muyaga Quarter
- Target group: People with disorders, members of XXXXXXXX, 30 people with mental disorders, members of XXXXXXXX will be direct beneficiaries of the project. The indirect beneficiaries will be the families of the mentally ill, the ministries of public health and that of the national solidarity which will see their budget allocated to the indigent mental patients revised downwards.
- Community involvement: The community involved will contribute up to: rent of a plot of 6 acres; purchase of the equipment of the henhouse; provide transportation; provide training on the management of agro-pastoral projects and the related monitoring and evaluation.
Sustainability of the Project
This project generates income: after 4 months, hens will lay an average of 400 eggs a day, or 100,000 BIF per day, or 3000,000 BIF per month. Part of the money received will be spent on the feeding and medicalization of livestock, the other on the purchase of psychotropic and / or epileptic drugs from mental patients who are members of XXXXXXXX. In the end the balance will feed the fund of the association for the extension of the project in the antennas of the association and in the families of the mentally ill.
At the end of the sixth months, the project will have to survive without assistance from the lessor. Thus, 10 to 20 indigent mental patients will be medically assisted. After one year, the project will be extended to other antennas of XXXXXXXX.
After two years, others members of the association trained on agro-pastoral management will benefit from 10 to 20 pullets to raise in their households.
The execution of the pullet breeding project will contribute to the improvement of the living conditions of the mentally ill, of their families by self-financing and self-promotion. In this way, the project is part of the National Strategy for Mental Health in Burundi and the Strategic Framework for Growth and Poverty Alleviation, 2nd generation.
