Project Background
Mozambique has about 12.6 million, representing more than half of the Mozambican population (52%). The country has one of the highest rates of premature marriages in the world: is in 11th place on the list, after the Niger, Chad, Central African Republic, Bangladesh, Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, South Sudan, Malawi and Madagascar, accounting for close to half of women who get married before 18 years and in 10th place in Africa. At the level of the Eastern and Southern African region, Mozambique occupies the second position, which is rather worrying from the point of view of the incidence of the phenomenon and of the policies at the country level, are implemented in order to reverse this situation. Some national studies show that some forms of violence against the child and girl in particular, as the premature marriages, are rooted in gender, social dynamics and discriminatory and harmful practices. The data of the survey of Multiple Indicators (MICS 2008) showed that 11, 4% of the girls aged between 20 and 24 years got married before the age of 15 years, and 51, 8% of them got married before the age of 18 years.
The economic pressure exerted on the poorest households, especially those in rural areas and the socio-cultural and religious practices prevalent, continue to drive families to marry their daughters earlier and earlier, when the girls have not yet reached sufficient maturity for marriage and for pregnancy or to take responsibility for being wives and mothers. Most school dropouts are linked to early pregnancy in girls, in a phase of your physical and emotional development in that they are not yet prepared to raise a child, with pretty serious consequences for your health and for the survival of their children. On the other hand, the country has one of the highest rates of illiteracy, therefore, has more than 8 million of the population that doesn’t know how to read, write and do math, of which 5 million are teenagers and young people from 15 to 19 years of age, and 3 million others are elderly prim mainly women, of this population.
Premature marriages constitute human rights violations and their consequences
- the perpetuation of poverty,
- gender-based violence,
- reproductive health problems, contraction of new diseases
- the loss of opportunities for empowerment of female children and, consequently, of women.
The national strategy for preventing and combating premature marriages has as its Vision: “Mozambique promoting respect for the rights of the child and free from premature marriages”.
