Problem of the area with respect to agriculture crisis:
Situation in area
Geography: Gadchiroli district is situated in the south eastern corner of the state of Maharashtra in India . It is bounded by Chandrapur district to the west, Gondiya district to the north, chhatisgarh state to the east and Andhra Pradesh state to the south and southwest. Gadchiroli district is located in the Deccan plateau and has a total area of 14,412 km2. Gadchiroli district was created in August 26, 1982 by the separation of Gadchiroli and Sironcha tehsils from Chandrapur district.
The district is categorised as a tribal and undeveloped district and most of the land is covered with forests and hills. Forests cover more than 79.36 % of the geographical area of the district. The dense forests and hills of the district provide a base for Naxalite (People’s War Group) activities
Culture, economy and infrastructure: This district is famous for bamboo and tendu leaves. The main agricultural product of the district is paddy, followed by jowar (sorghum), linseed, tur (red gram), and wheat. The main profession of the people is farming. There is no large-scale industry in the district except the paper mill at Ashti in Chamorshi tehsil, and the paper pulp factory at Desaiganj. There are many rice mills in the district. The tussar silk worm centre is in Armori tehsil.
In proposed project area in Gadchiroli districts the major issues those have been observed are decreasing agricultural income of the community due to several reasons such as poor irrigation facilities, declining productivity of land, low land holdings, lack of soil and water conservation measures, lack of knowledge of modern agricultural techniques, etc. Also, the presence of landless families is more than those of landholding families. In observation of Gadchiroli districts it came in focus that generally, the presence of agri-allied activities such as dairy, poultry, goatery, etc. and non-farm activities are very little. Very few people are involved in such activities. Therefore, the only source of income is agriculture. Community is forced to take loan from of private money lenders towards purchasing agri-inputs due to lack of credit availability and lack credit for undertaking businesses.
Geographical Background
Total population of Gadchiroli is 1071795 comprising of 542813 female and 528982 male populations. The sex ratio of the district is 976 which seems exceptional compared to other communities, but still this census has shown trend of decline in the sex ratio, which indicates slight increased son preference. In Yavatmal the total population is 2775457 along with female 1349864 and men1425593. The sex ratio of the district is 942.
Traditionally Madia Gond community is recognized as ‘KOYA’ community. For them koya means Human Beings. Their culture, tradition and way of living have a very rich historical base. Social structure of the Gond community is male dominant. Their long association with fundamental Hindu and Christian institutions had a great impact on the social psyche of this tribe. As a result, they have reduced them into inferior and minority status and now days, they identified themselves as Hindu or Christian Madia or Hindu or Christian Gond tribe, which has become serious threat to the independent identity of entire community.
Details of Gadchiroli district:
Gadchiroli is known as the most backward, non – industrial, most unemployed, forest covered district in maharastra as well as in the entire country. Total area of the district 14.48 Lakh hq. Forest 11.01 lakh hq. 1.93 lakh hq. area in cultivable and 1.82 lakh hq. area for actual farming Yet the district consists of rich natural resources available and in fact development could be based on the abundant available forest products, which can further enrich relationship of adivasis with the forest. however, many stakeholders do not agree with this basic concept and idea of sustain livelihood, especially the govt. authorities and elected people’s representatives who have their vested interests with the established industrialists, developers and businessmen. They feel that the forest area as an obstacle for the so-called development pattern and also, they feel that, due to the newly enacted forest rights act, several irrigation projects and railway project, do not get implemented. This is a wrong and anti-people perception of the govt.
We believe in the pro adivasi development which consists of sustainability, based on their culture and identity.
Rich natural resources like bamboo, tendu leaves etc. are going out of the district for industrial purpose and outside people of these places are getting employment whereas on the other side, people of the same district remain unemployed and day by day unemployment is increasing, which is leading towards seasonal migration from the district to the other parts of the district.
There is a main crop of rice in Kurkheda block of Gadchiroli district. There are Tur, dal, lakholi , gram , maize , written , linseed , flax , pepper , groundnut, vegetables and crops are taken. Community life style are change and need are increase of Food, clothing, shelter and basic needs is extremely needed. Everyone should get the right to food is a human. Agriculture is the ground of life in rural tribal people. The tribal societies depending based on agriculture and nature of happiness, life satisfaction has been the world. But the need to scale up the population had increased food needs. The technology was developed. Alternatively, farmers were discouraged from modern chemical farming. An increase in the production of large quantities Blogger expenses increased farmer debt and suicide Still, the food is very different and is a great security for chemical spared due to his agricultural Day to day land degradation is increased this has been a problem that also has enough food for all.
Farmer’s income is increase but low agriculture product price that’s why farmers have chosen way of suicide. So, there is highly needed to create awareness for traditional farming and organic farming every farmer. This question is fundamental to the developed natural farming, and developed sustainable community.
Sustainable agricultural practice is essential to the process of spreading the use of natural sustainable agricultural. So, Gram arogya decided for working in 10 villages of Kurkheda in Gadchiroli district for Propagate and promote the study of sustainable organic agriculture to enhance productivity of dry land farming to secure farmer’s income through use of LEISA and organic technique

Through this project, we wish to address the above issues and more in order to empower women in the region. We wish to undertake pilot programmes to show that women can undertake agriculture and allied and non-farm activities independently and can also play an important role in marketing, business management and financial management with specific mission, goal and objectives. LEISA or Low External Input Sustainable Agriculture/organic farming will be promoted and undertaken through this programme. In-situ soil and water conservation work and farm and nonfarm based enterprises will be promoted by various institutional building.
