About The Red Ribbon Award:
Presented every two years at the International AIDS Conference, the Red Ribbon Award honors community-based organizations that show leadership in reducing the spread and impact of AIDS.
2012 Red Ribbon Award winners were invited to attend the International Aids Conference, had an opportunity to showcase their work, and each received a $10,000 prize.
Its mission:
The Red Ribbon Award honors and celebrates community-based organizations for their outstanding efforts in reducing the spread and impact of AIDS.
Its objectives:
The Red Ribbon Award recognizes organizations that make differences in their communities through leadership and innovative and/or creative approaches in their work to eradicate AIDS.
Geographic regions where funding is made available:
The Red Ribbon Award is given to organizations worldwide.
Previously funded projects:
The Red Ribbon Award does not fund projects, but recognizes the achievements of organizations in their work to eradicate AIDS. Ten organizations received the Award in 2012.
Previous award winners include:
- The Help, Myanmar: focuses on the prevention, care, and support of homosexual men.
- SEROvie, Haiti: SEROvie offers HIV prevention, health referrals, psychological and social support, home-based care, and vocational training.
- Positive Women’s Network (PWN+), Sri Lanka: works to reduce discrimination of women living with HIV.
- Delhi Network of Positive People (DNP+), India: works to improve treatment and facilities for PLHIV and helps to empower patients to make informed treatment decisions.

The 2012 Red Ribbon Award winners will share their stories at the 11th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific to be held 18-22 November 2013 in Bangkok.
How to apply for the Award
The Red Ribbon Award is given every two years. The next Award will be given in 2014. Organizations must meet the following criteria to be eligible for consideration:
- The organization must have an operating budget of less than $300,000 (U.S. dollars).
- The organization must have been in operation at least one year prior to the time of application.
- Self-nominations are accepted.
- Organizations that will be considered for the award include:
- Community-based organizations
- Faith-based organizations
- Grassroots initiatives
- Organizations of people living with HIV and key population
- Small non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
- Organizations must complete a Red Ribbon Award Nomination Form (available online at the Award website) either online or via email.
- The 2012 Nomination Form requested the following information:
- Name of the organization being nominated.
- Type of organization (community-based, grassroots, faith-based, or non-governmental).
- The year the organization was established.
- The size of the organization in terms of paid staff and volunteers.
- The organization’s annual budget and sources of funding.
- Identification of any partners that the organization is working with.
- A brief description of the organization’s work towards preventing AIDS.
- Answering questions about the impact the organization has made in the community it serves.
- Brief information concerning leadership as well as innovative and/or creative approaches to stopping the spread of AIDS.
- Contact information for the organization.
- Two references that know of the organization’s work.
