Chatham House, formally known as The Royal Institute of International Affairs, is a non-profit, non-governmental organization based in London whose mission is to analyze and promote the understanding of major international issues and current affairs. It is regarded as one of the world’s leading organizations in this area.
Call for proposals
Chatham House in partnership with the Robert Bosch Stiftung is currently seeking applications for the Robert Bosch Fellowship from scholars in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine.
This visiting fellowship at Chatham House in London is intended to provide an opportunity for the next generation of scholars from these countries to advance their knowledge of post-Soviet politics, develop research skills, contribute to Chatham House research, and build links with policy and academic communities in the UK, Germany and the EU. The Fellowship is aimed at future leaders, researchers and opinion-makers at the start of their careers.
Two successful applicants will spend six months each working at Chatham House with the Russia and Eurasia Program team. During this time they will conduct a research project of their own design relating to the politics, economies and societies of the post-Soviet region.
In the course of the Fellowship, the scholars will spend a two-week placement at a German think tank in Berlin. Funds will also be available for the Fellows to conduct a research trip to the region.
Eligibility Criteria
– Citizen of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia or Ukraine;
– Background in International Relations, Social Sciences or Economics;
– Track record of research into the politics, economies and/or societies of the former Soviet Union or European policy in this region;
– Excellent English writing and oral presentation skills;
Research Project
Candidates must submit a proposal for a research project to be conducted during the Fellowship at Chatham House.
Possible research themes to be addressed include:
– Patterns of conflict and cooperation between the West and Russia;
– The future of Euro-Atlantic integration in Eastern Europe and the Black Sea region;
– Prospects for economic growth and modernization in Russia, Eastern Europe and the Caucasus;
– The Future of the Eastern Partnership and the EU’s relations with Russia;
– Prospects for democratization in the former Soviet Union;
– Conflict resolution and security in the post-Soviet space.
The parameters for the research proposal have been kept broad to allow applicants to devise a project which appeals to his/her research interests.
Remuneration and Accommodation
The Visiting Fellows will each receive a grant of 3,000 Euros per month (18,000 Euros in total per person). Travel costs to London and expenses relating to the placement in Germany and research trip will also be covered separately. Fellows must organize their own accommodation. If required, funds will be provided to cover hotel costs whilst permanent accommodation is located. There is no additional financial provision for the relocation of Fellows’ families.
