Chatham House in partnership with the Robert Bosch Stiftung invites applications for Fellowship is intended to provide an opportunity for the next generation of scholars from these countries to advance their knowledge of post-Soviet politics, develop research skills, contribute to Chatham House research, and build links with policy and academic communities in the UK, Germany and the EU. The Fellowship is aimed at future leaders, researchers and opinion-makers at an early stage of their careers.
In 2013, two successful applicants will spend six months each working at Chatham House with the Russia and Eurasia Programme team. During this time they will conduct a research project of their own design relating to the politics, economies and societies of the post-Soviet region. The Fellows will be expected to-
- write a peer-reviewed Chatham House Briefing Paper based on their research;
- present their findings at an expert roundtable event;
- contribute as necessary to other research projects and core work of the Russia and Eurasia Programme.
Possible research themes to be addressed include–
- Patterns of cooperation and conflict between the West and Russia;
- The future of Euro-Atlantic integration in Eastern Europe and the wider Black Sea region;
- Prospects for economic growth and modernisation in Russia, Eastern Europe and the Caucasus;
- The future of EU’s relations with Russia and/or the EaP countries;
- Prospects for democratization in the former Soviet Union;
- Conflict resolution and security in the post-Soviet space;
- Regional elites and networks of power;
- Regional views of Western engagement in the post-Soviet space;
- Prospects for intra-regional cooperation.
Fellowship Timeframe–
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview in November, at which they will be asked to present their research proposal in detail. Travel costs will be covered by Chatham House. The two six-month Fellowships are intended to run sequentially, the first commencing in January 2013, and the second running from July to December 2013. Candidates should indicate if they have a preference for the January-June or July- December period. Successful candidates will need a passport valid for at least 12 months from the commencement of their Fellowship to meet the UK visa requirements.
Eligibility Criteria–
- Citizen of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia or Ukraine;
- Background in International Relations, Social Sciences or Economics;
- Track record of research into the politics, economies and/or societies of the former Soviet Union or European policy in this region;
- Excellent English writing and oral presentation skills;
Candidates must submit the following Application Details-

- Curriculum vitae (maximum two sides);
- Research proposal (maximum 600 words in length);
- Publication sample in English. Candidates who have not published any work in English are welcome to submit a translation of their work published in another language.
