2012 African Palliative Care Scholarship Fund is announced for Social Workers involved in Palliative Care. This fund will offer opportunity to social workers involved in palliative care in Africa to undergo training in the respective field.
The National Association of Social Workers in the US (NASW) is offering funding support for this programme. Scholarships will be awarded a maximum of US $ 4,000 per person through a competitive application process over a year. APCA and FHSSA give priority to requests of social workers involved in palliative care related work. Application requests will also be considered for travel for palliative care conferences in order to strengthen Social work role in the development of palliative care in Africa.
Social work plays a critical role in palliative care because of its knowledge, unique perspective and skills, including: its expertise in navigating of medical and social systems; its knowledge base in the support, education, and interventions with patients, families and interdisciplinary teams; and its commitment to social justice and alleviation of health disparities. The social work role encompasses a broad range of functions in addition to direct practice with patients and families.
Social workers offer expertise to help solve challenging practical problems, financial advice and support, as well as advocate where necessary and make referrals to other agencies. Social workers need to be empowered to incorporate assessments in developing and implementing intervention plans that enhance the patients’ abilities and decisions in palliative and end of life care. However, the inadequate incorporation of palliative care into the social work curricula limits their ability to achieve these goals well in a multi-disciplinary setting.
