The individuals of developing commonwealth countries who are commencing Master’s (one year course) and PhD studies in the UK can receive the Commonwealth Scholarships. The Commonwealth Commission scholarship is funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).
Applications are considered according to the academic merit, quality of proposal and likely impact of the work on the development of the candidate’s home country. The applicants can be commencing studies in any universities in the UK.
The scholarship provides – student concessionary or other approved air-fair to the UK and return on expiry of the scholarship; approved tuition and examination fees, a personal maintenance allowance at the rate of £977 per month; grants to prepare a thesis/dissertation; an initial arrival allowance including visa reimbursement (where applicable); grant for approved study travel within the UK or overseas; contribution towards fieldwork costs for those scholars; paid mid-term fare to their home country for Scholars on three year doctoral awards.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must be the national of and permanent resident of developing commonwealth country.
- Applicants must be available to commence their academic studies in the United Kingdom by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2015.
- Applicants must hold a first degree of upper second class Honors standard (or above); or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification, which will normally be a Master’s degree by October 2015.
- Candidates from Commonwealth countries which require a Tier 4 visa to come to the UK for study may be required to take an approved English language test and/or be screened for tuberculosis in order to obtain their visa.
