World Habitat Awards 2016/17: Rewarding Innovative Solutions to Current Housing Needs & Problems of the World

The Building and Social Housing Foundation is currently inviting individuals/organisation from all over the world to apply for its World Habitat Awards 2016.

The World Habitat Awards is presented at the World Urban Forum and UN-Habitat Governing Council events in April of each year, increasing opportunities for international exposure, networking and dissemination of the award winning approaches. Two awards are given annually to projects that provide practical and innovative solutions to current housing needs and problems. Every year an award of £10,000 is presented to each of the two winners at the World Urban Forum (even years) and UN-Habitat Governing Council (odd years).

Focus Areas

Housing projects and approaches are sought for 2016/17 Award that:

  • demonstrate practical, innovative and sustainable solutions to current housing issues faced by countries all around the world
  • can be transferred or adapted for use as appropriate
  • are already being implemented or are completed ie not at design stage or very early stages of development
  • view the term habitat from a broad perspective and bring other benefits as well, such as energy or water saving, income generation, social inclusion, community and individual empowerment, health benefits, capacity building or education.

Benefits

  • International recognition, awards of £10,000 will be made to each of the two winning projects.
  • Trophies will also be presented to the winning projects, and travel and accommodation costs will be met for one representative of each winning project to attend the awards ceremony.

Key Dates

For the World Habitat Awards 2016/17 cycle:

  • 29th April 2016 – Final deadline for receipt of submissions
  • June 2016 – Notification of shortlisted projects
  • 1st August 2016 – Deadline for further information from shortlisted projects
  • August 2016 to January 2017 – Evaluation of shortlisted projects
  • February 2017 – Announcement of the winners of the World Habitat Awards 2016/17
  • April 2017 – Presentation of the Awards at the UN-Habitat Governing Council

Eligibility Criteria

  • Any individual, organization or government who has an innovative and practical solution to housing needs and problems from any country of the world.
  • More than one entry can be made by the same individual or organization.
  • Entries should relate to housing projects and processes that are either completed or in progress. Those that are at design stage only or in the very early stages of development cannot be considered.
  • Previous entrants can re-submit in subsequent years providing that the project has been further developed in the intervening time period.

Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law is currently inviting essay submissions for its Human Rights Essay Award 2016.

The Human Rights Essay Award is an annual competition sponsored by the Academy and seeks to stimulate the production of scholarly work in international human rights law. Participants have the flexibility to choose any subject related to the assigned topic. The essay has to be a legal article.

Awardees will receive a full scholarship to attend the program of advanced studies of the Academy and Human Rights and Humanitarian Law.

Essay Topic

The topic for Human rights Essay Award 2016 is- Extractive Industries and Human Rights.

Prizes

The Academy will grant two Awards, one for the best article in English and one for the best article in Spanish. The Award in each case will consist of:

  • A full scholarship to the Program of Advanced Studies on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law for either the Diploma or Certificate of Attendance options.
  • Travel expenses to and from Washington D.C.
  • Housing at the university dorms
  • Per diem for living expenses
  • The best articles will be published in the American University International Law Review.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates can be from any country who must hold a law degree and have demonstrated experience or interest in international human rights law.
  • Each participant must also include a curriculum vitae of no more than three pages in length explaining the experience or interest of the author in human rights issues.
  • Past Winners cannot submit essays in future competitions.

Essay Guidelines

  • Articles must not exceed 35 pages in length, including footnotes.
  • Essays must use Times New Roman font, 12-point double-spaced for the body of the essay and 10-point single-spaced for footnotes.
  • All essays must be on letter size paper (8.5 x 11 inches/21.59 x 27.94 cm) with 1 inch (2.54 cm) margins all around.
  • Character spacing must be set to normal.
  • Authors should not put their name or any identifying information in their essays.
  • Essays will only be accepted in Word format
  • Any essay that does not follow the guidelines will be reformatted and 5 points will be taken off. If the essay is longer than 35 pages, it will be automatically disqualified.
  • The essay has to be a legal article; therefore, it will include foot pages and citations. The absence of those will cause that the essay will be disqualified.

Festival of Migrant Film is inviting international filmmakers for its 7th edition of the Festival of Migrant Film and is encouraging applicants to submit their films and video works of any genre, length or year of production for consideration to the Festival programming team.

The Festival of Migrant Film is organized by non-governmental organization Slovene Philanthropy with the purpose of celebrating the World Refugee Day (20th June) and raising awareness of local audience about matters and issues related to migration, asylum and intercultural dialogue.

Call for Art exhibition: Celebrating the words of African Americans

Round Rock Arts (RRA) is currently inviting applications for its exhibition in Art Space: Celebrating the words of African Americans. Artists are invited to submit artwork that focuses on African Americans in literature or written text (novels, poetry, historical writings, song, etc.).

Painting or Photography entries must be framed and have a professional appearance. Paintings must be ready for hanging with wire (no saw tooth hangers) and protected under either glass or Plexiglass with the exception of media used on canvas or clay board.

Key dates

  • 12/30/15: Notifications will be sent to artists who submitted artwork for consideration.
  • 01/11/16: Artists, whose work was accepted, will bring their work to ArtSpace between 9am-10am.
  • 2/04/16: First Thursday Exhibit Reception from 5:30pm-7:00pm in ArtSpace.
  • 02/29/16: Artists will pick up their work from ArtSpace between 9am-10am.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Artists are invited to submit artwork that focuses on African Americans in literature or written text (novels, poetry, historical writings, song, etc.)
  • Artists of all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to submit artwork for this show.
  • Artists under the age of 18 may submit with parental consent.
  • Unframed stretched canvas will be accepted if the sides are painted and no staples are visible.

The Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), Government of India has launched Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) – scheme for eliminating open defecation and for enhancing sanitation and public health outcomes in urban areas of country within five years from October 2nd, 2014 to October 2nd 2019 by providing technical and financial support to state and city governments.

Nominations are invited for the awards that cover wide range of good practices across various categories that have resulted in enhanced quality of sanitation service delivery levels to the citizens at large and the poor and marginalized in particular.

Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) Awards are instituted by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India in association with the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) to recognize, inspire and celebrate excellence in urban sanitation management. These awards have been instituted with the explicit purpose of honoring urban local bodies, water boards and organizations that assist them in taking significant steps towards effective sanitation management and effecting improvement in service delivery.

What are the categories for the Award?

The awards are meant to acknowledge organizations that have made an exceptional contribution to the urban sanitation sector in one or more of the following categories:

  1. Innovative Practices in Improving Access: Individual toilets, Community toilets, Public toilets, Mobile toilets, SHE toilets, Sanitation in institutions, Technology innovations such as biotoilets, Eco-san toilets, Cost effective options, Model wards etc.
  2. Solid Waste Management
  3. IEC and Public Awareness
  4. Public Private Partnership
  5. Innovative Financing
  6. Innovative O & M
  7. ICT in Urban Sanitation & Regulation

Eligibility Criteria

The awards would be open to:

  1. Urban Local Bodies (ULBs)
  2. Parastatal agencies /Water Utilities and Boards
  3. Non-Government Organizations, Community-Based Organizations, Private-Sector Organizations, Bilateral and Multilateral agencies in collaboration with ULBs / Water Utilities and Boards.

How to apply?

  • Eligible and interested organisations are invited to submit entries in the format prescribed in Entry Form. All the eligible organisations can submit multiple entries in different categories.
  • An Advisory Committee, comprising sector experts, policy makers, academia, civil society organisations will assess entries based on the evaluation criteria. Finalists will be selected following a multistage procedure that will include initial screening and shortlisting followed by field validation of the shortlisted entries. Organisations that make it to the shortlist will be invited to make a detailed presentation.

In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the first UN General Assembly resolution, which established the goal of eliminating nuclear weapons and all weapons of mass destruction, the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs has issued call for entries for the UN Poster for Peace Contest.

The contest aims to raise awareness of the need for nuclear disarmament and to inspire citizens across the globe to add their voices, and use their artistic talents, to promote a world free of nuclear weapons.

Since its establishment, the United Nations has been seeking to eliminate all weapons of mass destruction, especially the deadliest and most indiscriminate – nuclear weapons. Nearly 70 years ago, the UN General Assembly’s first resolution, adopted on 24 January 1946, established the goal of eliminating all nuclear weapons and other weapons “adaptable to mass destruction”.
