Are you an artist or creator? Are you an NGO or a non-profit private body or a public body, whose activities contribute to the promotion of culture and artistic creation? If yes then apply for the International Fund for the Promotion of Culture 2016.

The United Nations Educational, scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is currently inviting applicants for its International Fund for the Promotion of Culture 2016. The resources of the International Fund for the Promotion of Culture are intended to promote:

  • Cultures as sources of knowledge, meanings, values and identity
  • The role of culture for sustainable development
  • Artistic creativity in all its forms, while respecting freedom of expression
  • International and regional cultural cooperation

Funding Information

The amount of assistance required is between US$ 20,000 and US$ 100,000 and covers no more than 80% of the total project budget.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The potential beneficiaries of the Fund shall be:
    • public bodies with specific responsibility for the promotion of culture and artistic creation
    • non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and non-profit private bodies whose objectives are in conformity with those of the Fund and whose activities contribute to the promotion of culture and artistic creation
    • individuals, particularly artists and creators
  • Priority shall be given, as far as possible, to requests from or benefiting countries on the latest DAC List of Official Development Assistance Recipients.
  • Priority is given to projects submitted by young creators aged 18 to 30 years and to projects aimed at benefitting youth.
  • Eligible activities for receipt of assistance from the IFPC are:
    • the production of cultural and artistic works
    • the organization of cultural and artistic events of national, regional and/or international scope contributing to the establishment of culture and development strategies and programmes

Nominations are open for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education 2016 with a motive to improve and promote the educational prospects of girls and women and in turn, the quality of their lives.

The purpose of the Prize is to reward outstanding efforts of individuals, institutions or non- governmental organizations that contribute to the advancement of education for girls and women.

Award Information

The Prize is conferred on two laureates awarded with USD 50,000 each, to recognize their exceptional contributions and support their work in advancing education for girls and women.

Eligibility Criteria

  • UNESCO is inviting member states and nongovernmental organizations in official partnership with UNESCO to submit nominations for candidates who have effectively promoted the advancement of girls’ and women’s education.
  • Prizes may be conferred upon individuals, institutions, or non-governmental organizations that have effectively promoted the advancement of girls’ and women’s education, with a focus on, for example:
    • girls’ transition from primary education to lower-secondary education and their completion of full basic education
    • adolescent girls’ and young women’s acquisition of literacy skills
    • creating gender-responsive and safe teaching-learning environments, free of school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV)
    • the development of gender-responsive teaching attitudes and practices among teachers; and
    • adolescent girls’ and young women’s acquisition of knowledge and skills to help their smooth transition from school to work and lead a fulfilling life.

The Rapid Response Facility: Addressing Severe and Time Sensitive Threats to Endangered Biodiversity

(RRF accepts applications year-round)

The Rapid Response Facility (RRF) is a small grants programme jointly operated by UNESCO World Heritage Center, Foundation Franz Weber and Fauna & Flora International.

The Rapid Response Facility (RRF) is a small grants programme that provides emergency funding of up to US $30,000 to address severe and time sensitive threats to endangered biodiversity, primarily within UNESCO natural World Heritage sites.

RRF prioritises its resources to fund emergency conservation activities in high-biodiversity value sites facing acute threats.

Objectives

  • Make funding decisions within an average eight working days from receipt of applications;
  • Mobilize funds quickly to respond to emergency situations in natural World Heritage sites, and occasionally in other sites of high biodiversity value;
  • Provide bridging funds for sites where longer-term funding is being sought – thus helping to help ensure sustainability of RRF interventions; and
  • Catalyse innovative financing initiatives as part of long-term support for sites.

Size of Grants

Grants of US $5,000 to US $30,000 are awarded for a period of up to six months.

Grants Awarded: To date, the Rapid Response Facility has awarded 35 grants (33 small grants and 2 interim grants) in 20 developing or transitional countries and one UK Overseas Territory. Small grants awarded have a total value of US$848,368.95

Eligibility Criteria

Beneficiaries eligible for grants include:

  • Statutory agencies responsible for site management (for example, national natural resource/wildlife agencies, park managers, etc.);
  • Registered local, national or international non-governmental organisations; and
  • The private sector (including local and multinational corporations).

As part of the 40th session of the World Heritage Committee and in the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage Education Programme, the Turkish National Commission for UNESCO and the Istanbul Site Management Directorate are currently inviting the young representatives from 35 countries for the World Heritage Youth Forum 2016 at the World Heritage Site of the Historic Areas of Istanbul, the Historic Peninsula and the entirely of the Golden Horn (Haliç).

Objectives

The Forum seeks to deepen youth knowledge and understanding the importance of:

  • the implementation of the World Heritage Convention,
  • the working methods of the World Heritage Committee,
  • the challenges and opportunities of the protection of multi-layered World Heritage sites.

UNESCO announces the International Fund for Cultural Diversity’s (IFCD) seventh call for applications from Parties, NGOs and INGOs that aim to foster the emergence of dynamic cultural sectors in developing countries.

The main objective of the IFCD is to invest in projects that lead to structural change through the introduction and elaboration of policies and strategies that have a direct effect on the creation, production, distribution of and access to a diversity of cultural expressions, including cultural goods, services and activities.

Funding Information

The maximum amount requested from the IFCD for each project is US$100,000.

Eligibility Criteria

The beneficiaries of the IFCD are the following:

  • Parties (public authority/institution) to the 2005 Convention from developing countries
  • Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) coming from developing countries that are Parties to the 2005 Convention, which meet the definition of civil society and criteria regulating admission of its representatives at meetings of organs of the Convention as mentioned in the Operational Guidelines relating to the role and participation of civil society
  • International non-governmental organizations (INGOs), which meet the definition of civil society and criteria regulating admission of its representatives at meetings of organs of the 2005 Convention as mentioned in the Operational Guidelines relating to the role and participation of civil society, and which present projects with impact at the sub-regional, regional or inter-regional level

UNESCO strives to build networks among nations that enable a kind of solidarity, by mobilizing for education, so that every child, boy or girl, has access to quality education as a fundamental human right and as a prerequisite for human development.

Key Jobs Responsibilities

The Programme Specialist will perform the following functions-

  • Provide intellectual, strategic and operational leadership and advise the Director on the most appropriate ways to integrate regional, sub-regional and country concerns in UNESCO’s strategies, policies, programmes and projects, in particular in relation to the area of Higher Education and ICTs.
  • Assess and lead analytical studies to identify regional demands, needs and interests in particular in the area of Higher education and ICT use in education; undertake and commission research in cooperation with higher education and R&D institutions.
  • Support and promote the design and development or utilization of existing solutions to meet regional demand, needs, interests and expectations from educational reforms, changes and innovations in the region; Share knowledge and best practices, update and disseminate information on trends across the sub-region.
  • Build on projects such as the PADTIDE to promote use of ICTs in strengthening the quality of education systems in the sub-region; Support the implementation of the Gender Transformation Leadership curriculum.
  • Support the development of synergies and collaboration with regional and sub-regional organizations to strengthen and harmonize Higher education systems; cooperate with regional partners to promote TVET & the harmonization of regional qualifications frameworks.
  • Identify key internal and external stakeholders and work collaboratively with them. Build influential partnerships, maintain systematic contact with UNCT in West Africa and develop joint programmes with other UN agencies or regional partners.
  • Generate extra budgetary projects in line with regional policy priorities, including the identification, preparation and negotiation of projects and cooperation frameworks with regional and donor agencies.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have-

  • Advanced university degree (Master or equivalent degree) in education, social sciences or related field.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • A minimum of 7 years of progressive responsible experience both at national and international level, of which at least 4 years in the planning, development and implementation of educational programmes.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the field of education, especially in the areas of higher education and ICTs in education.
  • Excellent coordination and interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical skills, ability to collect, synthesize and analyze information from various sources.
  • Proven ability to identify emerging educational trends and needs, and ability to plan strategically.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to prepare, present and discuss findings and recommendations clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to work in a team and to maintain effective working relationships in a multicultural environment.
  • Excellent knowledge (written and spoken) of English.
