The United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) supports democratization efforts around the world. These projects strengthen the voice of civil society, promote human rights, and encourage the participation of all groups in democratic processes.
Areas of Focus
- Community development
- Rule of law and human rights
- Tools for democratization
- Women’s empowerment
- Youth empowerment
- Media
Grant request can be made in between USD 100,000 and USD 300,000. The Fund makes grant calls on November each year. Strong preference is given to applicants from countries and regions that are in the transition and consolidation phases of democratization, in particular countries emerging from conflict, new and restored democracies, least developed countries and low or middle income countries.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants can be
- Civil Society Organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations, engaged in promoting democracy.
- Independent and Constitutional Bodies, including Election Commissions, Ombudsman Institutions, National Human Rights Institutions and other independent governance bodies, for project proposals facilitating the inclusion of the voice of civil society.
- Global and Regional inter-government bodies, organizations and associations other than the United Nations, for project proposals which strengthen the voice of civil society.
- Formal networks can apply. Informal networks without an administrative and accounting structure available for monitoring and reporting purposes cannot apply. However, one NGO of an informal network can be the applicant with all or some of the network members registered as project partners in the proposal, but only with the clarification that they compose an informal network. Prime responsibility for reporting will fall on the applicant NGO.
- Applications can be made for more than one project. Remember, separate applications are required for separate projects. Grants are made for only one project of an organization.
- Applications can be submitted in English or French language.
