The United States Agency for International Development in Southern Africa (USAID/SA) in cooperation with the Government of South Africa is seeking applications from qualified local South African organizations for a rule of law project to benefit the Department of Justice and the Office of the Chief Justice. The project will pilot best practices for the reinstatement of South Africa’s specialized sexual offenses courts and support to victims of gender-based violence (GBV).
The Project Program will include formative research and training curriculum development for select judicial sector stakeholders around Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex (LGBTI) social context and sensitization. The overall goal of the project is to support the strengthening of democratic governance and accountability in South Africa.
Estimated award funding is up to $1,300,000

Components of the program
The three-year pilot project includes tasks and activities set forth below, organized by the following components.
- Pilot Sexual Offences Court Management Improved
- Improved Justice Services to Sexual Assault Survivors in Pilot Sexual Offences Courts
Past Projects
- Judicial Sector Strengthening Project in HIV/AIDs prevention, ended in July 2012, and was implemented by the National Center for State Courts.
- Women’s Justice Empowerment Initiative (WJEI), implemented for USAID by Research Triangle International (RTI) which ended in September 2012.
Eligibility Criteria
- South African organizations including non-governmental organizations (NGOs), faith-based and community organizations, and for-profit companies are eligible to apply for the grant project.
