A project on countering “Sexual Violence to Rural Left-Behind Girls” was implemented by the Beijing Cultural Development Centre for Rural Women (BCDC) in China with grant support from the UN Trust Fund against Violence against Women.
Background
In rural areas of China where parents migrate to cities for work, they often leave behind the girls in their villages. These girls are vulnerable to sexual violence and therefore, it was necessary to prevent it.
Strategy
BCDC firstly improved “girls’ knowledge and self protective capabilities around the threat of sexual violence in three pilot sites, and extending to other villages.” It also developed the ‘community caring network model where a ‘community activity centre’ and a ‘left-behind girls’ home’ was organized. Community involvement was key to address this issue.
