UNFPA, UNICEF and UNIFEM implemented the “Combating violence against women and girls in Papua Province, Indonesia.”
Background
Conflict affected areas have high incidents of violence against women (VAW) and it was important to implement a project to reduce them.
The objective was to reduce the cases of VAW in conflict-affected areas.
Strategy
The UN agencies implemented a special strategy called ‘violence free villages’ where it organized a community watch system and an early detection, reporting and referral mechanism for identifying and intervening cases of VAW in the project area. It also involved “13 elementary and high schools, empowering teachers and students as focal points and peer educators.”
