- Project ideas to address Violence against Women (VAW) in Developing Countries
The UN Trust Fund against Violence against Women (VAW) gave grant support to Women United Together, Marshall Islands (WUTMI) in the Marshall Islands to implement the “Initiative for a Better Response to Address Violence Everywhere (iBRAVE).”
Background
The problem existing in the project area was the “implicit social acceptance of violence against women in the household and widespread reluctance to publicly discuss the issue.” In such a situation, it was important to create awareness on this issue and make it a criminalized offence.
The objective of such a project was to improve awareness against VAW and strengthen law to counter it.
Strategy
WUTMI in partnership with the Ministries of Internal Affairs, Justice and Halth increased “public awareness and strengthen legislation and protocols around domestic violence” by implementing strategies such as “implementation of a comprehensive multi-media campaign, education of key communities groups, developing alliances with government agencies, and training of police and medical “first responders” to implement response protocols.”
