DFID invites applications for its early stage of ‘Meeting the WASH 2020 Challenge programme’, expected to operate in a similar manner as the current WASH Results Programme.
The programme aims to reach people with improved sanitation or water together with hygiene promotion by March 2020.
DFID will directly oversee and manage the portfolio, providing management, policy and monitoring oversight, having geographic coverage including low- and lower-middle income countries where there are significant WASH needs and where relevant high levels of malnutrition (predominately stunting or wasting). The principal focus should be on the priority countries where DFID has a bilateral programme.
Programme Focus
To be classified as nutrition-sensitive, a programme needs to:
- Include nutrition as an objective, and include malnutrition indicators (e.g. stunting/ wasting) at impact-level
- Contribute to at least one nutrition-sensitive outcome – in this case the relevant outcome is ‘improve women’s or adolescent girls’ or children’s access to water, sanitation and hygiene’
- Be aimed in part or in full at women and / or children below 5 years DFID’s intent is to source, through a competitive process, up to five suppliers or consortia of suppliers to deliver WASH and nutrition-sensitive WASH results that will make a significant contribution to the UK Government’s WASH and Nutrition targets.

Note: The UK’s aid relationship with India has evolved, and the programme cannot fund interventions in India.
