NGO PROFILE
Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai Welfare Society
(SALBWS)
Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai Welfare Society, founded in July 2001, is registered as Provincial level NGO with Social Welfare Department, Government of Sindh
The aims and objectives of this society are:
• To provide health facility for the poor people living in rural /semi urban areas of Sindh.
• To promote literacy through opening of schools and adult literacy centres.
• Removal of environmental pollution.
• Development of children by providing quality education and medical services to them
• Empowerment of women through education and vocational training focusing on poverty alleviation.
This organization is working on different projects on health, education, social development and other welfare programs for the welfare of women and children of the poor, deprived and backward areas of Sindh.
Within a short span of time the society has been able to achieved great success and has embarked upon different projects of social welfare services. This includes establishment of medical dispensaries and holding of medical camps in the semi-urban and rural areas to provide health services to the needy at their doorstep. In the education sector, this NGO has established primary school at Karachi and adult education centre at Dhabeji. SALBWS also conducts health education lectures and awareness programs for providing information on HIV/AIDS and other common health problems in the rural and partially developed areas.
In future this NGO plans to expand its health services by establishing hospital in Wazir Goth near Ahsanabad besides establishing more schools and literacy centres. More awareness programs shall be undertaken in future for sensitising people on poverty, social evils through seminars and conferences.
and soon also in the Sher Maher Village, at medical field camps in villages, and support services for other NGO-run hospital/ dispensaries/ mother-& child health-centers in the area.
We have a business-plan to make our healthcare services gradually financially sustainable, particularly the running cost, with private patient facilities, health-products shop, tourist hospitality & health-resort services, to subsidize healthcare for the poor. Private investments into our health-resort facilities are welcome, but presently we need financial, technical & hardware (funding or in-kind) support for the following items:
• Glaucomatous, robust, also second-hand (up to 20, cost-estimate for 1 new = Rs.1, 200/ US$ 200)
• Incubators, robust, also second-hand (up to 6, cost-estimate for 1 new = Rs.20, 000/US$ 340)
• Defibrillators, robust, also second-hand (up to 2, cost-estimate f.1 new = Rs.15, 000/US$ 255)
• Electric oil-filled radiator-heaters, also second-hand (up to 50, 1 new = Rs.4, 000/US$ 67) or a
• solar-heating room-& water-heating system (cost-estimate Rs.900, 000/US$ 15.000)
• Printer (black white) for Toshiba Ultrasound machine, also second-hand (Rs.50, 000/US$ 910)
• Convex-probe f. Toshiba Capacee-II ultrasound, also second-hand (Rs.60-120,000/US$ 1-2.000)
• Mobile x-ray, robust, also second-hand (up to 2, cost-estimate f.1 new = Rs.600, 000/US$ 10.000)
• Mobile clinic/van, robust, also second-hand (up to 2, cost-est. f.1 new = Rs.1.8 Mio./US$ 30.000)
• Exchange & up to 20 mobile-phones w.head-sets for Medicare-helpline (Rs.240, 000/US$ 4.000)
• Water-filtration system & up to 10 drinking-water-coolers, (system from Rs.100, 000/US$ 1.700 & 1 water-cooler from Rs.6, 000/US$ 100)
• TV-dish & video-distribution system with up to 12 TVs, placed in patient-waiting-rooms & wards, for health-education & training, (also second-hand, cost-estimate for dish & video-distribution system = Rs.60.000/US$ 1.000, cost for 1 TV = Rs.6.000/US$ 100)
• 50’’ flat-screen TV for media/training room (also 2nd, estimate Rs.120, 000/US$ 2.000)
• Kitchen/cafeteria equipment w.multi-flame gas-cooker, up-to 2 electric stoves, up-to 2 micro-wave ovens, fridge & up-to 2 freezers, pots, pans, pressure-cookers, grills, mixers, blenders, kitchen-tools, crockery & cutlery, (also second-hand, cost-estimate Rs.300.000/US$ 5.000)
• Second-hand furniture for guest/doctors rooms.
• Poor-patient fund: We do charge private patients at local market-rates, below those in Islamabad and other towns of Pakistan, to subsidize the general patients, who pay fees below the average cost of Rs.120/- for outdoor & Rs.1, 200/- for surgical patients, and for the destitute, who receive free treatment. Income covers presently only one-third of the total running cost. Till the time we are able to earn enough from other income, we require donations for being able to provide free or low-cost treatment to the poor (about 50% of the local population). The Govt’s Jinnah Hospital at Karachi & District Hospital Ghotki and primary healthcare facilities elsewhere provide ‘free’ service, but have only very limited gynae capabilities, and overload and hidden costs deter many people from their use. • Title of Account Name. M/S Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai Welfare Society,
A/C.No: 3253-9, Allied Bank Limited, University Road Sultan Building Block-13C Karachi /Pakistan, SWIFT-Code: ABPAPKKAXXX
• Construction of Hospital -building at Rural Area of Ghotki Province Of Sindh .70 kms west of Ghotki, covering a population of 70.0000 (half of Ghotki District-valley), where there is no other clinic but the CMH (military hospital) for military personnel & family, with private patient charges for others. Construction & equipment/ furniture- cost Rs, 3,200,000/US$ 55.000, land, staff & some equipment/furniture already with us. Shifting from the present premises inside Khanpur Maher village will double present no. of daily patients to 120 women/children/men.
• Up-gradation of the Marafie Mother & Child Health Center at Gulistan e Johar, 80 km north of Karachi, and improvement of other NGO/CBO-healthcare facilities in the far-flung areas of Rural Area Karachi & Province of Sindh is being planned.
• Gynae-wing & nursing/midwifery-school at our Hospital at Gulistan e Johar: Our present hospital-building at Rural Area of Karachi has only two GP-wards with up-to 10 beds and soon two private patient ward-rooms (2-4 beds), a labour-& a delivery-room, one OT, x-ray, ultrasound, lab, dispensary, and 5 consultation rooms (gynae, pediatric, dermatology, GP, tele-health). It badly needs a separate gynae-wing with a separate, septic OT, neo-natal/pediatric unit, pediatric & maternal wards, and a nursing/midwifery school, as local families are reluctant to send their daughters down to Rural Area of Karachi, where the nursing school is also in a bad shape, due to lack of funding. We are presently acquiring land for the extension of our hospital, and are approaching foreign donor agencies, but may require also private donations, to be able to start the construction or for equipment (construction/ Equipment/furniture/fixture-Total Cost Rs.12 Million/ US$ 200.000).
We ho
pe that you may find this interesting enough, to mobilize support for our services to the poor people in this remote mountain region. Please visit us and enjoy our and local peoples’ hospitality among the imposing mountains, glaciers and roaring rivers.
With best regards.
Yours sincerely
Danish Channa
