Letters of Interest invited for the Alive & Thrive Grants Program

Alive & Thrive (A&T) is currently accepting applications for its grants program. A&T is a five year initiative funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and implemented by a consortium of organizations such as AED, BRAC, GMMB, IFPRI, Save the Children, University of California-Davis and World Vision.

The A&T initiative has been established for the purpose of improving infant and young child feeding (IYCF) by increasing rates of exclusive breastfeeding and improving complementary feeding practices.  The Small Grants Program under A&T initiative “aims to fund operational research projects that will identify novel approaches and overcome key barriers to improving IYCF at scale in low and middle-income countries. Approaches that can potentially be extended to different countries/settings are of greatest interest.

In the first year of the Small Grants Program (2009), the request for Letters of Interest listed multiple potential topics for research. In this second year, the focus is on operational issues related to IYCF interventions, as listed below. Letters of Interest that do not address one or more of these issues are highly unlikely to be competitive.

High priority issues:

  1. Optimal ways to “bundle” different interventions (i.e. combinations of interventions that are delivered using the same delivery platform or channel), at least one of which includes IYCF
  2. Optimal delivery channels for different intervention “bundles”
  3. Costs and benefits of intervention “bundles”
  4. Best strategies to reach the ultra-poor to improve IYCF
  5. Comparison of behavior change communication strategies for better IYCF programming and advocacy

The emphasis on intervention “bundles” reflects the growing consensus that integrating IYCF interventions into broader programmatic initiatives is likely to be a more cost-effective and sustainable approach than stand-alone IYCF interventions.”

The two-stage application process will evaluate the letters of interest and selected applicants will be requested for full proposals. “Awards for small grants will generally be in the range of $50,000-100,000 USD. Grant requests may not exceed $100,000 (for the total duration of the project). One- or two-year projects may be proposed, but in the latter case the second year of funding will be contingent upon satisfactory progress by the recipient during the first year.”

The deadline to submit the letters of interest is 14 September 2010. For more information, visit this link.

YOWECE has 20 kids already at Bunju Dar Es Salaam, been taken care by Widow Mwanaidi Makoba.(Matron) Elizabeth Ally (Assistant Matron) and cheef cooker
    Abubakar Haji-(Activities officer)

Out of the twenty children in our centre.YOWECE Pays school fees for twelve children who alredy excuted in different Govement and private Primary ,Secondary schools and Colleges in Arusha, Dar Es Salaam and Moshi.
Now the centre is closed, because of ecomomy problems,we had no money for food, rent, and transport for children to schools as many children they go to schools very far from Bunju.
And the house is small, not enough for children, and not good for their health.
All the children,we divede them in defferents centres, until we get funds and a good house for them.

YOWECE intends to renovaite and buy the house, where we have the Orphan Centre in Bunju,.

We have sent our request for a plot to our Mbezi Beach Ward office.

The Centre is not yet registered but the process in under way, after we Finnish the house. The Centre is been reorganized by the relevant authorities that is the Bunju Local Government and has all the necessary documents that allow to operate within the area. We need funds to finishing the house, house rent by the time we are renting the house, until we buy this house, if we get some grants from donors, buying double Decker beds for the kids, because now we have only 4 beds where kids sleep 3 in each bed and others sleep on matresses, Food, Mosquito Nets, Clean Water, Soap, Toothbrush/Tooth paste, Clothes especially uniforms for the young who at school, Bed sheets, school fees, salaries for Centre Matron,Assistant matron and activities officer, a car for the center to take the children to hospital when they get sick,or to the beach and defferent pleces for activities , shopping, transport for Orphan Centres staffs, Paraffin, Exercise books toys, football, etc

We have rented a house with 3 bedrooms,Kitchen,Dinningroom,Corridow, open space outside for kids to play .The rent is 380,000 per month. The house is not finnished yet,
We need some fund as 80,000,000 shs to finnish it so that it will be suitable to use it as a home for children. And to have stable water and eletricity in the area,
In the house, there is water, but we need to drill the ballhole for water because water and eletricity is a big problem in Tanzania. the eletricity is on process. We need Solarpower, to avoid the eletricity problem in Pasua and Moshi .

We are involved in several projects in mainly Africa. One of our core activities is coconut processing. To improve the economics of it, our company in cooperation with others managed to develop new value added products from coconut waste like cattle and fish feed. However an existing product the virgin coconut oil (VCO) is known for its property to enhance the immune system of the human body especially young children. Due to its high content of lauric acid it resembles the properties of mother milk.
Most probably that explained the high difference in child mortality in two areas of Mozambique, one with an abundance of coconut and one without. Falls research to prove this under the IYCF program?
