The Say Xchange invites youth between 18 and 25 years from Mozambique, Malawi, South Africa and Zambia to apply for scholarship for the five-month cross-border exchange program. The youth involved in some form of volunteer or community based work in their home country will be selected for the scholarship.
The Say Xchange aims to promote regional integration and a southern African regional identity amongst young people who are the emerging leaders in their community.
The participants will be placed in community based organizations mainly active in impoverished and underprivileged areas of South Africa, Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique. They will work on community service projects on environmental protection, health, work with migrants, children and others.
The exchange will take place from 9 July 2014 to 5 December 2014.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must be citizen of the country participating in the current SayXchange cycle (must be resident in country of origin at date of selection) and having lived there for the past 6 months.
- Applicants must be in possession of a valid travel document/ passport that is valid for the duration of the exchange and 3 months thereafter.
- Applicant must be culturally sensitive and competent in between 18 and 25 years of age. S/he must have knowledge about their own cultures and global community, including current affairs.
- Applicant must demonstrate track record of leadership, evidence of previous involvement in volunteering organizations/activities in local community.
- Applicant must be an articulate speaker, confident, assertive and contentious.
- Applicants must articulate their vision and what they want to achieve clearly.
- Applicants must side with the excluded and marginalized.
- Applicant must be willing to commit to the vision of regional integration and development of a Southern African identity.
- Applicant must have evidence of sound mental and physical health.
