CDC: Polio Eradication and Emergency Response in Afghanistan and Pakistan

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is seeking applications from eligible entities to fund a program entitled “Polio Eradication and Emergency Response in Priority Countries” with an aim to support the government of Afghanistan and Pakistan to achieve polio eradication in 2016 and provide for post-eradication sustaining efforts.

The program has established a presidential task force and activated an Emergency Operation Center to implement and monitor activities. Multiple partners are working with the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) including Rotary International, WHO, UNICEF, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, USAID and others.

Strategies

  • Support polio campaign activities in security compromised and inaccessible areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
  • Improve training and supervision of polio eradication initiative (PEI) activities in Priority 1 and 2 low-performing districts (LPDs) in Afghanistan
  • IPV catch-up vaccination of children < 5 years of age in low-performing districts of Afghanistan.

Expected Outcomes

  • Increased access to children with polio vaccine in the insecure and inaccessible areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
  • Improved quality of polio campaigns in Priority 1 and 2 low-performing districts.
  • Improved Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) coverage among children < 5 years of age in Afghanistan.

Funding Information:  Subject to the availability of funds, the estimated total funding is$2,000,000

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicant must have demonstrated experience and collaboration in the following areas:

  • Collaboration in public health programs with priority country national governments
  • Collaboration with multiple polio eradication partners including BMGF, USAID, WHO, UNICEF, Rotary and others
  • Collaboration with movement partners ICRC and ARCS who will negotiate for safe access in insecure areas
  • Demonstrated accomplishments in designing and implementing public health action and programs in complex settings
  • Demonstrated capacity to mobilize sufficient culturally competent personnel to achieve outcomes
  • Ability to manage grants and contracts

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), an agency of Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is seeking applications from organisations with an aim to promote the safety of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulated products and advance public health through strengthened collaboration and partnerships with State legislatures.

Objectives

  • Inform FDA of proposed State legislation regarding FDA regulated products and provide status updates.
  • Provide technical assistance to FDA, State legislatures, and State, local, territorial, and tribal agencies on legislation regarding FDA regulated products.
  • Provide outreach to State legislatures and regulatory agencies on proposed and existing FDA regulations.
  • Provide FDA with situational awareness of State legislative activities.
  • Promote informed decision-making by State legislatures and regulatory agencies on regulatory issues impacting FDA regulated products.

Funding Information

  • FDA intends to fund up to $175,000, for fiscal year 2016 in support of this grant program.
  • The scope of the proposed project should determine the project period. The maximum project period is five (5) years.

    • The association/organization must serve as a bipartisan organization of by and for state legislatures.
    • The association must be dedicated to serving all state legislators and legislative staff through research, publications, consulting assistance, meetings, seminars and electronic services.

The aim behind this program is to support communities’ efforts to become healthier places to live, work, learn, play and pray.

The Cultivating Healthy Communities program will support projects that benefit underserved, low-income, and minority communities.

America Solidaria US is currently accepting applications from volunteers across US for its year-long Fellowship Program in 13 countries throughout the Americas. Projects are focused in the areas of health, education, and economic development to benefit children, youth, and families living in poverty.

USAID/Burma: Defeat Malaria Activity to Eliminate Malaria from Burma

The United States Agency for International Development in Burma (USAID/Burma) is seeking applications from qualified organizations to implement the Defeat Malaria activity with an aim to reduce the malaria burden and control artemisinin-resistant malaria in the targeted areas, and contribute to the long-term national goal of eliminating malaria in Burma.

Defeat Malaria will strengthen the capacity of local partners, from national to peripheral level, to effectively lead, manage and implement interventions towards the goal of malaria elimination. It will also strengthen the malaria surveillance system to better inform and target interventions and strategies and to monitor progress and will engage communities and promote the involvement of the private sector.

Objectives

  • Achieve and maintain universal coverage of at-risk populations with proven vector control and case management interventions, while promoting the testing of new tools and approaches.
  • Strengthen the malaria surveillance system to comprehensively monitor progress and inform the deployment and targeting of appropriate responses and strategies.
  • Enhance technical and operational capacity of the NMCP and other health service providers at all levels of service provision.
  • Promote the involvement of communities, private healthcare providers, private companies and state-owned enterprises in malaria control and elimination initiatives

Alliance for Health Policy and System Research: Inviting Researchers from Low- and Middle-Income Countries!

The Alliance for Health Policy and System Research (AHPSR) is calling researchers, decision-makers and other stakeholders from low- and middle-income countries for a unique opportunity to engage in Implementation Research and Delivery Science (IRDS) and to highlight their work to the global health community.

The purpose of this call is to solicit case studies that are real examples of projects of Implementation Research and Delivery Science (IRDS). The objectives of these case studies are to demonstrate the benefits of employing this approach on health systems and/or outcomes, as well as to provide insight on how projects are carried out in practice.

Case studies will be published in a compendium by the Collaboration for Implementation Research and Delivery Science between the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research within the World Health Organization, the World Bank, and the United States Agency for International Development.

The compendium will showcase the range of IRDS projects and the potential of this approach for improving health. This compendium may be used for reference by program managers carrying out implementation research in low and middle income countries, teaching by professors or others involved in training and capacity building for research, or to promote IRDS to the greater global health community.

AHPSR Objectives

  • Stimulating the generation and synthesis of policy-relevant health systems knowledge;
  • Promoting the dissemination and use of health policy and systems knowledge; and
  • Strengthening capacity for the generation, dissemination and use of health policy and systems research knowledge among researchers, policy-makers and other stakeholders.

Eligibility Criteria

The case should be a real-world example of an IRDS project that was carried out with the aim of generating knowledge on the implementation and scale up of interventions, including policies, programs, and practices, as a means of contributing to health improvements and/or systems strengthening in low and middle income countries.

 AHPSR is looking for cases that highlight the following factors:

  • Research that generated knowledge on the implementation and scale up of interventions that was applied, resulting in demonstrated improvements in health systems and/or outcomes;
  • Projects that engaged important and diverse stakeholders throughout the research process;
  • Research that used a mixed methods approach to provide an in-depth understanding of implementation and scale up;
  • Research that identified lessons learned (both positive and negative) about implementation, as well as proposed feasible options for action within the context;
  • Projects that contributed to the establishment of mechanisms or a system for continuous learning and adaptation during implementation.

Global Youth Innovation Network (GYIN) is seeking applications for its second Global Youth Summit called the 2016 Youth Agribusiness, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship Summit on Innovation (YALESI 2016) that will be held in Dakar, Senegal from March 29-31, 2016.

The summit will prioritise young people’s needs, considering their developmental needs including under-served populations, such as girls, to an effective and inclusive employment strategy.

The summit, representing over 100 countries, will give its participants the tools to learn and share how young women and men, especially in rural areas, are increasingly acquiring new capacities and developing innovative solutions to transform themselves as Hunger Fighters, Job Creators, Innovators, and Change Agents. Youth participants and partner organizations will present proven innovative agribusiness and entrepreneurship practices by sharing their knowledge, expertise, challenges and success stories.

GYIN is a fully youth-inspired and led network for youth entrepreneurs and rural micro-enterprises who are committed to act as hunger fighters, change agents, and innovators, driven by the passion to see generational transformations and changes from the grassroots to the global level. The network creates an environment to support youth in development and empowerment programs.
