Under the catalytic category of the Fund for Gender Equality, UNIFEM announced that it has selected 27 projects to fund more than nine million dollars with each organization receiving between $100,000 and $500,000. Nearly 90% of this funding has been rendered to civil society organizations and the rest given to governmental agencies. These organizations are spread around 26 countries around the world.
Uganda’s Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE) has received this UNIFEM grant to implement Gender Budget Program “to advance gender accountability within the government.” In Ghana, ABANTU for Development in partnership with Ghana Gender and Climate Change Coalition will work with grant for influencing climate change policies from a gender perspective. BAOBAB and Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND) will render political education to women in Nigeria. Asociación Nacional de Empresas Comercializadoras de Productores/as del Campo, A.C. in Mexico will use its governmental and non-governmental network to provide economic opportunities for rural and indigenous women. In Egypt, the ‘Promotion of General Policies to Protect the Rights of Domestic Workers in Egypt’ project implemented by Al-Shehab Organization for Comprehensive Development in partnership with Egyptian Society for Economic and Social Rights will empower domestic workers in poor regions of the country.
The Sri Lankan project of ‘Changing Minds: Nominations and Votes for Women’ by Women and Media Collective will advocate for increasing the nominations of women by political parties. In India, the Rajasthan Network for People Living with HIV and AIDS in partnership with IMPACT Partners in Social Development “seeks to build support for, draft and submit a policy document to the Government of Rajasthan that would establish a package of services and protections for women living with HIV and AIDS, taking into account the multiple levels of discrimination and vulnerabilities they face.” HomeNet Southeast Asia will use the grant for advancing the advocacy initiatives of home-based and informal workers. The ‘Promoting Gender Equality in and through Community Radio of Nepal’ “aims to strengthen awareness of women’s rights through institutionalizing a gender-sensitive policy in all 164 member community radio stations and the production and broadcasting of special radio programmes.” It will be implemented by the Association of Community Radio Broadcasters Nepal.
